Op-Ed: Bush confesses to war crimes

Politics – George W. Bush's speech on September 6 amounted to a public confession to criminal violations of the 1996 War Crimes Act. He implicitly admitted authorizing disappearances, extrajudicial imprisonment, torture, transporting prisoners between countries and denying the International Committee of the Red Cross access to prisoners. These are all serious

Dakota: I added Op-Ed at the beginning of this story to clarify that Bush didn't really "confess" in the true sense of the word.

Great catch. Was just going to post this.

What have we come to when Amnesty International and the Red Cross cite us as abusers of prisoners? We should be ashamed.

This what this administration has done to this great country which was a beacon of freedom and liberty. Now we use Saddam's tactics in the imprisonment and torture of suspects. Now Bush does almost everything Saddam Hossin was accused of.

I can tell you that however you think Bush may have "tortured" prisoners it was absolutely nothing compared to the way Saddam utilized torture. The two are not even comparable by any means. If you equate them it is simply because you are unaware of the facts.

After watching last nights 9/11 ABC documentary, it just reinforced my vote for George Bush. Liberals can not be trusted with the security of this Nation. Clinton was totally ineffective in the war on terrorism.

In reading the above posts it occurs to me that most of you are probably terrorist sympathizers or the usual hate America Liberals.

Thank God for President George Bush.

Unlike farmercoward,

Im not ready to destroy the USA to "protect" it.

Why do all these bush lovers hate this countries freedoms? If you hate America so much farmercoward, why dont you move to China? They already have a system setup for people like you - you can sacrifice all your rights and freedoms for "government protection".

And to ChristianZ,

How do you know how bush tortured prisoners? And you talk about being unaware of the facts? Are you so deluded to think that you know what goes on behind those closed Gitmo doors? Or are you the one over there doing the torturing? The established international treaty, designed to protect OUR troops if ever captured, is being violated by bush. If he's got nothing to hide, why does he hide it? If he's conforming to international accepted rules on prisoners, why does he hide it? The truth is, you dont know what you're talking about - just more wishful thinking with eyes closed to reality

To Netscape GM JASON CALACANIS, did you write this headline?

You are doing a great job at the new netscape... That's what we need more and more onsided bias headlines and News Reporting.

It is great to know in advance that the new Netscape dosen't believe in Fair and Balance reporting.

You are making significant progress in your effort to let Netscape users know exactly what JASON CALACANIS stands for.

Netscape GM JASON Calacanis, does this sound correct to you:

If users are looking for entertainment, games, weather, etc,

the new netscape is fine, However, if one is looking for Accurate Factual Current News of the day, one would be far better off visiting other sources to avoid Bias Onesided headlines and news reporting.

Good Luck Jason, you may have a future with CNN and/or CBS

Your posts and name calling are disgusting. The reason I don't want Liberals in control of our security is that they have proven they can't handle that responsibility.

As I've said before, people like you can never name one time their rights have been violated. It is always this sweeping indictment of Bush and the Patriot Act. Or some other perceived illegal action he has taken.

Why don't you grow up?

This is a good article and this is worth repeating:

"For five years, U.S. government officials have justified unlawful actions with political arguments that have no legal merit. Now that the political tide is turning, Bush and his associates are behaving like other war criminals throughout history, marshalling what power they have left to shield themselves from the legitimate consequences of their actions."

Vote Democrat in November so the warmongers will have to answer to Congress and the American people and not the other way around.

The current Executive branch obviously thinks that they can put into effect any law that supports what ever they want regardless of legalities and the Constitution. Howard Dean said in an interview yesterday, and I agree, "The Constitution is the only thing separating us from them" We must not allow Bush and his cronies to continue to erode our civil liberties and well respected laws for the sake of personal properties, foreign lands, and corporate profits.

The 9/11 ABC film is not a documentary. It's a dramatized and in some cases a fictional account of a real event based on a real document. If you believed all of it, check the sources and screenwriter interviews. It's flawed and misrepresentative of what actually happened. Pure propaganda.

Farmerman, I am told tonight that the 9/11 movie will deal with Bush's doing nothing about the info he was given. So Are you going to watch part 2 so you can give a fair and balanced opinion, or just comment on part 1 showing the things that the Clinton Administration didn't do. Grow Up and Be Fair

We ALL have to work together to make OUR country a BETTER place to live.

BTW both sides play the name calling game. Peace

Considering that President Bush already committed the crimes and wants to have the laws and/or acts amended, does this change the fact that it was illegal at the time? Even if they were amended, wouldn't he still be held accountable for all acts committed before the amendments? If not, does this mean that all people convicted of these crimes would no longer be guilty?

avatar
Reply

jaxguy, Thanks for pointing that out that it is just a dramatization. I forgot to mention that. Peace to you.

It is a good thing that Congress moves so slow and perhaps will not give Mr. Bush immunity from the law that he swore to uphold and defend when he took office. He believes he has the right to ignore the parts of the Constitution that he doesn't like as well as the laws established by Congress that every man in the military has sworn to defend. Bush is not fighting the war against terrorism because the terrorist are financed by big oil indirectly. Look at how their profits have increased. Bush will pull the troops out of Iraq when big oil tells him to. And Bush is flying around the country telling the people he is right and everyone else is wrong. And he is flying at our expense to deliver his political message. Perhaps he'll be the first American President tried as war criminal. Let's hope he is the last as well. The American Way has always been for truth and justice. Even in war those two principles have eventually won out.

Farmerman,

It wasn't a war until Bush did notthing as President and let 911 happen. Clark was trying to brief the Pres and his cabinet since day one of the administration. Dubya finally came off vacation and got the PDB, titled: Ben Laden determined to attack inside the US, a month before 911 and twidled his thumbs until 911. Finally, to call good Americans "terorrist sympathizers" only shows your rampant polarization, even redicalization.

The point in this article is that Dubya violated national laws in addition to international conventions/laws. He made the terorrist threat a war to assume powers he didn't have under the commander and chief guise.

Just because someone lives in Iraq doesn't mean they are a terrorist and should be subjected to cruel and inhumane torture in a secretive prison that no one knows about except the torturers. This isn't being sympathetic, it's called being humane and torture is a very inhumane practice. Torture doesn't lead to valuable intelligence information anyway. If someone is being tortured they'll lie and say what ever the hell they need to say to stop the torture. Then all you have is a bunch of lies and still no good information. I'm all for capturing and killing the real terrorists but torture is rather barbaric and does nothing to stop terrorism.

In response to farmerman and anyone who doesn't know what its like to have your rights violated, all I can say is that it is you that should grow up because you obviously haven't experienced enough to make you a grown up. You obviously aren't black or any type of minority because I know they have their violated all the time. You obviously aren't American with a foreign name, having to deal with always being questioned and profiled just because of your name.

You are obviously just a generic white male who lives in the mid-west that has never had to deal with the real world that exists outside of your comfort zone. So in response, I think it is far worse to fool-heartedly think that you are grown up rather than to have some growing up to do. Afterall, we never stop growing. Just some choose to grow in ignorance.

He is trying to make the law so that it is retroactive and covers anything done prior to the time the new law is put into place. He's trying to cover his tracks because he knows that if the dems win the house he has no chance of surviving the next two years without impeachment hearings.

Jaxguy,

But wouldn't this also imply that everyone else who also committed those crimes would not be guilty as well? Or is the amendment going to say something like "Applies only to the president of the united states" or "Applies only to people with initials G.W.B"?

If these laws are passed Bush is proposing they will essentially make war crimes legal acts with no repercussions.

What part of last nights show was false or "pure propaganda?

Don't think for a minute that torture won't give you good information. The reason torture is used around the world is because it works. By the way what were the torture techniques we used?

And as I posted earlier, here we have another Liberal complaining about his rights being trampled. Please give me ONE instance of where you personally were denied your rights by this administration. Don't worry I don't expect you to answer.

Farmerneocon,

You are proof of the dumbing down of America. If you think that ABC's version of what happened as proof of complicity by the Clinton administration, you are a fool. W had all of that same "intelligence" that Clinton did, and did nothing. Looks like to me you can't trust the conservatives to protect this country either. I know whay you hate liberals, because we are all smarter than you. We don't follow like sheep when an imperialist asks us to blindly follow, as he makes dictatorial decisions that undermine this country. Anyone who supports Bush is not a patriot and is definitely un-american.

The laws would probably apply to all military personnel and government officials like himself. Can you imagine the chaos if these laws applied to Americans on American soil? If he gets his way we are just one step away from exactly that.

I'm not calling "good Americans" terrorists sympathizers. If you read the post I said sympathizers or hate America Liberals. And yes I firmly believe many Americans on the left get a sense of satisfaction everytime they see a setback for the US in Iraq or anywhere else in the world. They don't like our use of power and even feel guilty about our having such power. Plus, the Libs need us to fail in order to regain power. And the return to power is the ultimate goal of the Left.

If you and so many others think he violated US and International laws then take him to court. You know it isn't true, but you just love the sound of that accusation.

Here we go with the infamous three word catch phrase that means nothing, cut and run. How about stay and pray.

I don't want an imperialistic president and that's what's happening. There are no Kings in America. By the way I haven't been in a position where my rights would be denied but in case I was I would want the rights the Constitution guarantees all Americans, including yourself. I would not want whatever rights the president decides I should have that particular day.

I think it is embarassing for people like the ones here to accuse the President of the United States of committing "war crimes." I am all for an open discussion on policies, but America can not sit in the policies of decades ago.

How about Saddam Hussein not having received punishment for war crimes after his numerous attacks against humanity-I would hardly call gassing the Kurdish people a mere act. Those people were slaughtered ruthlessly and we are the people committing war crimes? Torture in that form will never and should never be tolerated by any society, but there is a boundary that can be established to permit forms of limited interrogation techniques, which ARE necessary in the era we live in. The use of detention facilities overseas and of foreign agents may not be the "kid-friendly" approach to terrorism, but these people would be more than willing to go at any length to attack us, we must be willing to go an equal length to protect ourselves.

No this crap come from people like Dean, Pelosi, Reid,Kennedy and the rest of the Liberal stars. I almost forgot Moveon.crap

Yeah, their higher IQ makes them the worst criminal in the history of American presidents and you are an accessory and equally a war criminal. They should be put on trial; people like you are part of their criminal activities.

For those of you who think sleep deprivation is torture (never mind our own soldiers endure much worse in the line of duty), I do have videos of each of the be-headings done by our Iraqi friends. I defy any of you to watch one all the way through and tell me what torture really looks like after seeing the real thing. Would you believe not one of the fire fighters on 9/11 were complaining about conditions.

This higher IQ stuff is bull. I apologize farmerman for not responding to your ignorant comments sooner; some of us do go to graduate school after all and have classes to attend. First of all, if you are trying to argue the point that you must "see it to believe it" or in more appropriate terms, application proves theory rather than the converse which is more commonly agreed upon, you have some serious flaws and didn't read my message carefully. You probably live in a very sheltered place with a lot of like minded individuals around you. This is why you have never learned to accept dissenting opinions. Keyword is accept.

But in response to your question, I am afraid you have asked the wrong person. I have an Arabic name but my family has been in America for man generations. I don't even speak Arabic. Yet every time I go to Mexico or cross the border in general, all my white friends show ID and are allowed to pass in less than a minute. I on the other hand show my ID and they ask me were I am from. I tell them I am "America". They then tell me "but where do you come from" and I tell them "I was born in **** Texas". They then proceed to take me into a little room where another person interrogates me for absolutely no reason.

avatar
Reply

I have to sit there humiliated (because the room is also where they take people suspected of smuggling drugs) while my friends have to wait for me to be allowed to cross. Now I know what your thinking, "but this is just a precaution, this doesn't happen all the time". My response is yes, it does happen every time. I used to cross the border at least 5 times a week and they always detained me.

avatar
Reply

The truth is even though I am just as "American" as my friends, I am not treated that way.

avatar
Reply

Now that is just one of many examples I could tell you. If you don't believe me, I would happily provide more details. But what I wrote before is something I think you should read more carefully, you need to go out of your comfort zone. Why don't you move out of the place I mentioned earlier that you live and move to a more diverse city? Make friends with people that aren't of the same race, religion, or mind set. Until you do then you are still just going to be limited by living in your comfort zone. A plant only gets as big as the pot you put it in.

One good question leaps to mind. If the war on terror is so heavily bogged down in Iraq and Afghanistan, what are we doing to stop terrorists coming from Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Yemen, to name some of the countries which could be harboring terror cells. What about sleeper cells in the US, how are we handling them? Ultimately, i laugh when people say 'we are fighting over there, so we do not have to fight over here.' Any terrorist wanting to attack the US is not hiding in Iraq, they would be hiding a lot closer to the US than Iraq.

The people who attacked on 9/11 were Saudis who got their start in Hamburg Germany...a considerable distance from Baghdad.

Farmerman,

In response to your post about liberals should take the President to court if we disagree with what he has done. We the people cannot just "take him to court." In his role as President and Commander-in-Chief, the Constitution sets forth ways of trying the President and removing him from office. First, he would need to be impeached by a majority of the members of the House. Then he would have charges sent to the Senate, which would hold a trial. The Senate would then determine based on the evidence whether to remove him from office.

If he committed war crimes, then he should be held accountable. As it is, his father GHW Bush has been indicted on war crimes in Iceland. I doubt Congress will have the votes come January to impeach the President.

Clearly, his speech gives the impression that he did indeed commit war crimes.

It's very annoying when you see people trying to rationalize Dumbya's lawless behavior. He took an oath as titular president to uphold, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. He has violated that oath repeatedly. It is not an option on the part of the President - even in wartime - to cherry-pick what laws he will obey. Even SCOTUS has affirmed this. Dumbya has violated both Constiutional law and statutory law. International laws, treaties and conventions that are ratified by Congress automatically becomes the supreme law of the US: it's in the Constitution.

We are supposed to be a nation of laws, but Dumbya has made plain that he intends to operate as a dictatorship. The Repugnant Congress has built a firewall around this criminality and refuses to allow any accountibility: that is why they're going down in November.
