Olbermann: 'Bush is Playing Christians for Suckers' »
Posted by: Neophile 2 years agoKeith Olbermann dissects a book that is soon to be released called "Tempting Faith" by David Kuo. David Kuo was the number two guy at the Office of Faith Based initiatives in the White House and he writes a scathing account of how the administration used Christians to grab and maintain power, and then gave them nothing in return.

Oct. 11, 2006, 11:56 p.m.Well, power is addictive and once you have it I'm sure there are alot of things people will do to keep it, including Bush! Hope the bible thumpers enjoy this!

They won't believe it if their 'leaders' tell them not to. The GOP has been using these people, by using the wedge issue of abortion, for YEARS, knowing full well that it's a Constitutional issue, and Congress has no power to change that, other than an amendment that will never pass.
However, I have no sympathy for people who know NOTHING about what this country was built on, and would dump their religious dogma on this nation in the blink of an eye.

Oct. 12, 2006, 3:07 a.m.A Christian friend of mine, a true believer in fact, said she would vote for Bush in 2004. I told her I could never do such an immoral thing cause he is a crook and a murderer in God`s eyes. She said she thought he was a `real` Christian because of the words he used, "only a real christian who knows jesus could say those words" was her reply.
I told her that`s why the admin pays people very good money to write his speeches.

Oct. 12, 2006, 7:50 a.m.Anyone who has half a brain was already aware of this. It's as old as the hills. But the Christians are no better. They are mostly hippocrits themselves.
There's a joke I heard a while back, goes like this:
Q. Do you know how to tell the catholics from the babtists?
A. The catholics will speak to each other in a liquor store!
I know a lot of people who are "christians,", and many of them will screw you in a heartbest.

Nov. 1, 2006, 1:06 p.m.I'll gladly respond to that, froggy! Your question, "be honest now...can you do that?" is based upon your beliefs, not upon historical fact. Historically, Christians have a real bad record on the whole "screw you" issue. They have in fact screwed many people for the last two milleniums, including the last century when they failed miserably in coming to the defense of the Jews in Germany. Historically, that's the tip of the iceburg of Christians screwing people. Second, "trying to lead a better life and be a better person" is not the soul territory of Christians. Even the dreaded atheists try to do that. Most everyone I have ever known tries to do that. Talk about ego! How is it that some "Christian's" egos allow them to see themselves so piously above everyone else?

Oct. 20, 2006, 8:30 p.m.Not because he's bashing Bush, or anything like it.
Just because he is one of the few media people who calls a spade a spade, and presents a healthy dose of reality.
I know, I know, reality sucks doesn't it? (to some)

Oct. 12, 2006, 8:41 a.m.Lurch - what a sad conversation; sadder still because of the millions of people like her who truly believe what she said and vote that way.
ADAGuy - Those are probably the christians who shout the loudest about their love of God. Too bad religion is used as a pawn so much by the GOP. (God's Own Party?)
Bush's team, cetainly not him, are clever, crafty hypocrites.
He's just plain dumb. and the worst part is he doesn't know it.

Oct. 12, 2006, 9:30 a.m.thank you Olbermann, i would have never thought a politician would say something to a group to get votes. my eyes are now open.
for someone who his opposition says is a moron, he has invented voter fraud & came up the concept of telling the voter what they want so they will vote for him. that seems to be a pretty smart individual to do all of that.

Oct. 12, 2006, 9:57 a.m.This is Olbermann's heavy-handed attempt to demoralize Evangelicals in the hope that they'll stay home in the upcoming election. Olbermann doesn't give a tinker's damn about Evangelicals getting represented in government.
Unfortunately for him, his ratings are the inverse of his oversized ego. So his attempt won't amount to much outside of the lefty fever swamps

Oct. 12, 2006, 10:02 a.m.This is what Olbermann said off the record before the 2004 DNC.
"Democrats are the party of ' How can we fool them today" They absolutely depend on the ignorance and stupidity of their voters. The have to lie about what they believe and who they are. They use class, race and age warfare to divide people. They are currently working to help the enemy defeat their own Country. You can't tell the difference in a speech from OBL or any Senate Democrat."
Looking straight into the camera and plying his trade...

Oct. 12, 2006, 10:16 a.m.The Christian right are not Christians according to the teachings of Christ.
Their leaders are egomaniacs and the followers are sheep.
They all need to go back and read "the sermon on the mount"
Christ taught compassion, kindness, forgiveness and the golden rule. Apparently Falwell and Dobson need a refresher course in Bible 101.
Has anyone every wondered by Billy Graham and son are not part of the Bush entourage-?
Not a big surprise that Rove called the Christian right "nuts"
It is all about politics and the Christian right became lemmings.

Oct. 12, 2006, 10:18 a.m.The Republicans have found the right buttons to push with the evangelical crowd and although many of them did vote for them in the past 3 elections I think many of them are starting to see the smokescreen. The Democrats haven't presented too many evangelical type of messages themselves so I think that many christian people are going to stay home this election. They're fed up with both sides and especially feel duped by the Repubicans.

Oct. 12, 2006, 10:28 a.m.Ningyo, Olbermann was essentially doing a book review. The book was written by someone who worked in the office of faith-based initiatives. So if you have a gripe about content, you should comment on the author, not the messenger.

Oct. 12, 2006, 10:30 a.m.We all know that politicians lie. Republicans and Democrats. But when these lies are discovered we need to know about it.
If what this book says is true then the Republicans have a serious problem. A persons religious beliefs are for some THE most important aspect of their lives. In many instances it defines them.
Lies like "Read my lips, no new taxes" or "I did not have sex with that woman" are bad enough. But the manipulation of the Religious Right in the way that seems to be described in this book can be viewed as a direct and personal insult by millions of Christians. And it's not just a one time thing for them. Because they may discover that this has been going on for 6 long years. Or longer.
These people put their trust into this administration. This trust is what influenced the outcome of the last 2 presidential elections and the course of this country, and the world.

Oct. 20, 2006, 9:04 p.m."I did not have sex ...." sad, but notalot to do with the country (personally, I sleep a lot better after sex, so perhaps we should leave that to a pres.'s own discression)
"read my lips, no new taxes", can we just put that down to political crap? Heard in every election the world over.
And then you have the multiple, ever changing bull this government has fed us, 99% of them don't stand up to scrutity - definitily a different catagory, right?

Oct. 12, 2006, 10:33 a.m.Well I'll be damned...so to speak. Maybe GWB has more sense than I was giving him credit for. If he is really ridiculing these nutjobs behind their backs, at least he isn't a TOTAL fool.

Oct. 12, 2006, 10:35 a.m.The black vote is up for grabs is the Republicans would stop pushing them away and do some things blacks think are in their best interests. Same case with evangelicals and the Democrats. Neither party is willing to do what is required, because doing so would alienate their bases.

Oct. 12, 2006, 10:37 a.m.I never really realized how many people USE christianity as a put-down until I started reading these post. there are so many narrow minded people out there, now Olbermann has fallen prey. I just don't understand why its accepted in this nation to bash christians as a whole. It seems the same people that beleive in "separation of church and state" are the same ones using terms like "christian right" and the whole sheep references.
-

RivrWlker
Nov. 1, 2006, 1:47 p.m.taquito...it isn't Christianity most of us are using as a put-down, it's Christians! I have very little against Christianity, minor stuff, but I got lots against some Christians. Christians shouldn't even be involved in politics in any kind of an organized way. It isn't even Biblical to be involved in politics. A Christian's political beliefs should be left up to individual Christians, not organized in some kind of a joint effort to accomplish a Christian agenda politically...especially in this country. If some Christians want to join in on the anti-abortion side, fine! Just allow other Christians to join in on the pro-abortion side if they see that issue in a different way. Don't presume that all Christians are anti-abortion and rally the entire Christian faith to become involved in politics because of it. Politics is a trap for religion, as Mr. Kuo is now revealing for the gazillionth time in history. Politics is a nasty business, and to become involved with it is to risk getting dirty. The religious right is now filthy dirty because of their involvement with politics.
