While George and Laura Bush simply refuse to cut their "vacation" at their Texas ranch short to attend ceremonies for former President Gerald Ford tonight, Donald Rumsfeld actually attempted to excuse his absence.

We all have our priorities i guess.. Hope this settles once and for all in peoples minds that Bush could give a rats ass about tradition, country and the people who came before him. not like he doesnt have a tax payer funded plane to get him there in a few short hours... he has no excuse here, its just disrespectful and dare i say, unpatriotic?

Aidenag is correct. There is no excuse for this. There is a reason however. There are a number of services scheduled for President Ford across the country. President Bush will be attending one next week. So unless the standard is that President Bush needs to attend every one of them then this entire story is laughably weak.

I would like to know if the outrage extends to Presidents Carter and Clinton also? They have considerably less on their plate so I would suppose that they are even more inexcusably disrespectful and unpatriotic than the President.

BTW, Rumsfeld is stuck by record snowfall in New Mexico so no disrespect can fairly be assigned to him.

"President Clinton announced Nixon's death at a formal appearance in the White House Rose Garden, praising his predecessor as "a statesman who sought to build a lasting structure of peace." Clinton declared a national day of mourning, and said he would attend Nixon's funeral, which will be held at the Richard Nixon Library and Birthplace in Yorba Linda, Calif., on Wednesday at 4 p.m. California time."

Worldwide congregation will attend Reagan funeral

"Former Presidents Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton will attend the service. Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev will be on hand, as will Britain's Prince Charles and Prime Minister Tony Blair. Democratic presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry will be among those attending, a Kerry staffer said."

Bush has no excuse! It is down right disrespectful!

This only goes to show how disrespectful both of these men are to our country. They make these comments about what a fine man Mr. Ford was, and how he did all these great things after Nixon resigned, but to really tell how well a president he was, he couldn't even get elected to a full-term, because in the minds of the American voters, he just wasn't all that great, and he lost to Jimmy Carter. Obiviouly he could captain a football team, but he couldn't captain the US. That really is bad.

I am basically disappointed in ALL of the D.C. politicians that couldn't manage to show up. Everyone has schedules and plans. But everyone knows how to CHANGE those plans IF it is important enough to them to do so.

Apparently paying respects to the passing of Gerald Ford is unimportant to most of D.C. ... it is disrespectful.

I am so angry with President Bush's reasons why he couldn't come back from his vacation to pay his respects to President Ford and his family. This is just unforgivable and wrong. I understand it's the holidays but you can't control when people pass away. You can however be a decent human being and do the right thing. With that said, Presidents Ford and Carter are the last two Presidents that possess the morals and character that I grieve in losing for myself, my family and the country.

I love President Bush but I am so disapointed in him right now. This just makes me sick !! I believe this is a result of Bob Woodward releasing his private conversation with President Ford, I hope he is happy!! I think when President Ford said his private thoughts about the WAR could be released after his death, that he meant awhile after his burielBob Woodward will do and say anything to get on TV. But even though I am blaming this on Bob Woodward I am still disgusted with Bush, he has a obligation to show up and his wife should kick his ass all the way there, she is not any better than he is or she would not allow him to do this.
