Many no-shows for Ford's funeral service »
Posted by: TechnologyExpert 1 year, 9 months agoEverything was in place for Gerald R. Ford's state funeral last night -- everything, that is, but the statesmen. President Bush sent his regrets; he was cutting cedar and riding his bike on his ranch in Texas. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and his deputy, Richard Durbin, couldn't make it, either; they were on a trip to visit Incan ruins. Inc

Dec. 31, 2006, 1:46 p.m.Conservatives were quick to condemn Reid and Durbin, who proceeded with four other senators on a trip to South America, knowing they would miss the rites in Washington. "He's the incoming Senate majority leader, for crying out loud, and he can't even show a little bit of respect?" commentator Mike Gallagher demanded on Fox News.>>>>>>
No mention of bush not showing? Ya gotta love that 'fair and balanced' faux news. If nothing else, they're good for laughs.

Dec. 31, 2006, 2:15 p.m.Well, I guess Fox news fogot to admonish W ... "he's the leader of the United States for crying out load, and he can't even show a little bit of respect?.
Asided from their usual bias, I am basically disappointed in ALL of the D.C. politicians that couldn't manage to show up. Everyone has schedules and plans. But everyone knows how to CHANGE those plans IF it is important enough to them to do so.
Apparently paying respects to the passing of Gerald Ford is unimprtant to most of D.C.

Jan. 1, 2007, 12:42 p.m.George W is the commander.
He does not have to explain his absence.
he does not have to explain anything.
He is the commander.
DC does not care either.......

Jan. 1, 2007, 6:18 p.m.How could Bush "disrespectfully" miss a funeral that hasn't even happened yet? Ford has been lying in state for public viewing and there has been a private family service. Referring to the article clip below - the funeral is on Tuesday and Bush is delivering the eulogy...
[Ford was to lie in state for public viewing through Monday.
On Tuesday morning, Ford's remains will rest outside the Senate chamber before a funeral service at Washington National Cathedral where Bush will deliver a eulogy.]

Dec. 31, 2006, 9:30 p.m.Having taken a trip in the time machine, George W is excused.
He already knows all the no-shows, including the ones from his family.

Dec. 31, 2006, 11:06 p.m.Too many good football games on TV for the politicos to attend the funeral. They had to watch their bets.
Love the bit about faux news.....how typical.

Jan. 1, 2007, 7:02 a.m.You'd think that at least George Sr woulda been there, he served underneath Ford when he was called into the Presidency (I'm pretty sure anyways, my mind isn't what it was before this particular New Years, LOL).
The entire Congress should be ashamed of not showing up!!! And since when do that freaking take a vote to go or not go, anyways!! That's just plain rude.

Jan. 1, 2007, 7:35 a.m.How completely ignorant is this? I am learning to dislike Bush and this government more and more every time I read about him and them. Even if he did it as an insincere PR stunt if nothing else, atleast it would have made him look better in the eyes of world. WHat would have been so hard as to summon the AF1 Pilot for a quick trip to the rotunda??
People watch you, Georgie, and your little dog Barnie, too.....
What a slap in the face of disrespect for President Ford. I can't wait to see who come to GW's wake and funeral when our Creator calls him home, or whoever is going to call him home...... In the end, you meet God. Unless, of course, you are an athiest, and don't believe that-but honestly, I think you still do. There has to be a higher order; a higher power, than us. Just like in a job, there is always a supervisor. Why do people think we have no "supervisor" in our daily life on earth?
Rest in Peace, President Ford.

Jan. 1, 2007, 7:34 a.m.PS-Why were Harry Reid and his deputy, Richard Durbin on a trip to see the Incan ruins? Are they trying to see what the current administration is going to leave America looking like in a few years? I would have to make a call that our taxpayer money afforded that trip.
This was a major slap in the face to a former president. Is there no respect or honor anywhere, anymore....
Mr. President, you sure picked an inopportune time to die. Perhaps you should have waited until next week, whe the holiday parties were over.

Jan. 1, 2007, 9:05 a.m.The President should be thanked for not showing up. Each time he does, it costs over a million dollars for security and everyone else attending has to be security searched turning anything into a mess.

Jan. 1, 2007, 9:40 a.m.some things matter more than money, Dubya should have been there PERIOD!... and speaking of money, with all the BILLIONS were spending in Iraq (you remember Iraq, that little adventure that Dubya promised us would cost the US taxpayers NOTHING) a million or so for the President to show the proper respect due a former Pres is a pocket change....

Jan. 1, 2007, 9:30 a.m.I am amazed that so many people did not show up. The ones that showed up can talk as much garbage as they want. I am glad the press are putting the no shows in print. Let them answer to the lack of respect they shown.

Jan. 1, 2007, 11 a.m.This is a sad testament to what the nature of our elected reps in office now is.Selfishness and pettiness rather than duty and statesmanship reign supreme. The vast majority of them simply have no respect for nor sense of history. Needless to say those who are not students of history will almost certainly repeat the mistakes of the past (oft on grander larger scales). It is incredible that the president felt it was more important to be cutting cedars back in texas than the symbolism of his presence at the funeral of a true statesman and former president, from his own party!!! (Somehow in my heart i cannot but feel it has something to do with Ford being critical of his Iraq debacle). Dick Cheney for all his faults showed class by being there as did democratic senators like Chuck Schummer. Let us not even talk about Harry Reid and other major democrats. This is merely a vista that shows how warped the values and sense of honor of many of these people are. Truly unfortunate.

Jan. 1, 2007, 12:49 p.m.I am sorry that you spue so much anger on this thread. It isn't about either party not showing up.It is about not showing respect for a former sitting president and his family ..These educated men and women should all be there. They after all have been elected and are paid very well for what they do...They represent the people of the United States. My sympathy goes to the Ford family...None of us will ever be prepaired for death..

Jan. 1, 2007, 11:33 a.m."President Clinton announced Nixon's death at a formal appearance in the White House Rose Garden, praising his predecessor as "a statesman who sought to build a lasting structure of peace." Clinton declared a national day of mourning, and said he would attend Nixon's funeral, which will be held at the Richard Nixon Library and Birthplace in Yorba Linda, Calif., on Wednesday at 4 p.m. California time."
Worldwide congregation will attend Reagan funeral
"Former Presidents Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton will attend the service. Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev will be on hand, as will Britain's Prince Charles and Prime Minister Tony Blair. Democratic presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry will be among those attending, a Kerry staffer said."
Bush has no excuse! There is only word for this, disrespectful!
