Posted by: ameliog 1 year, 7 months agoMilitarily powerful nations throughout history have dominated weaker nations for the same economic reasons as ours. The rise of the Roman empire and consequent collapse of its republic offer useful lessons.

Jan. 7, 2007, 2:14 p.m.Here's a small taste from the article:
"Stripped of secrecy, the false claims of threats, the patriotic mumbo-jumbo and the appeals to American goodness, we see a century-long drive to deny democracy and to control people for our own economic purposes.
We waged propaganda wars to demonize leaders who in themselves and their movements presented little or no threat to Americans. To the contrary, they often had been educated in and espoused American values."

Jan. 7, 2007, 4:04 p.m.Interesting... and timely.
Looking at our attempts to depose Chavez (elected in Venezuela) and Hamas (elected by the Palestinians), it does seem we only support democracies which we can "influence". If it doesn't, its gone... and we've instated some REALLY bad "friendly" governments.
If we're going to support "democracy", we have to accept when those people don't want us there.

Jan. 7, 2007, 10:28 p.m.Very good find. Every voting American NEEDS to read this, because it is truth.
I keep telling people that we are headed for the plight of the banana republics we currently exploit. Big money is multinational now. It doesn't NEED the USA any more than it needs any other particular locale. Big money now can afford to find a welcoming set of arms for today.

Jan. 7, 2007, 11:57 p.m.Good observations.
I know how this type of article will irritate some people. The ones who take the simplistic view that pointing out anything negative about the US is the equivalent of hating the country, or those in denial that the US would ever do anything "bad".
This article will not reach those people and alter their perspective.
I like this country a lot and can't think of a better place to live. I see the greatness in its ideals and the goodness of its people. But we as a country have to be honest with ourselves and acknowledge the areas where we aren't so good, so we can improve. Which in turn will benefit our neighbors to the south and countries around the world.
