Jan. 14, 2007, 2:24 a.m.11/09/05 FOX News Poll: Global Warming
"NEW YORK - Most Americans believe global warming exists and a majority thinks it is a major problem - if not a crisis, according to a recent FOX News poll. Even so, less than half think they personally can do anything about the problem."
Most Americans believed global warming exists over a year ago, what took him so long to figure it out?
I will wait for the next slogan, or will it be:
WAR ON THE ENVIRONMENT!

Jan. 14, 2007, 7:42 p.m.Come on, enjoy this at least. Think about all those right-wing know-nothings. What are they going to do? First the administration reversed its attack on wildlife and put the polar bear on the Endangered Species List and now they admit something must be done to reduce our emissions of greenhouse gases. Those morons have fewer places to run.
I suppose that the argument that we will lose jobs if we conserved are pretty hollow seeing that they were already lost due to free market capitalism and free trade.
The only thing I agree with the right-wing freaks is that China should not be excluded from reducing emissions. Just because we were irresponsible doesn't mean that they can be or the world can afford their emissions. All developing nations should be forced to reduce too.

I'll take Sheehan, Pelosi, and Boxer over Foley, Haggert, and Abramoff any day of the week.

Jan. 14, 2007, 8:31 p.m.Excuse me for being cynical, but for them to admit the fact now after years of denial, there has to be something on the table for his contributors such as nuclear plants for electricity or maybe a tax break for the electric companies to build windmills generators. LOL

Jan. 14, 2007, 11:10 a.m.Well whether it's crazy liberal talk or not, now is the time to start down a new path for energy needs. The old saying you should never put all your eggs in the same basket still applies. We have been so consumed with the oil leg, (referring to a three or four legged stool) we have squandered our position as a world leader since the 1973 oil embargo was our first wake-up call to use the vast R&D engine of this country to produce alternative energy resources and methods.

Jan. 14, 2007, 11:13 a.m.I wonder how it will be positioned; acknowledging global warming and personal sacrifice against the forces arrayed against us are diametrically antithetical to the Adminsitration's positions on same for the last 6 years.
We've hard a lot of ideological rhetoric and positioning. Will the environmental community so readily embrace the President's words at this late date?

Jan. 14, 2007, 11:35 a.m.I doubt it. I think there are too many people that just hate Bush, period. If he disagrees with the left, he's either evil or stupid (or both). If he agrees with the left, it's either a trick (cuz he's evil) or weakness (cuz he's dumb). Either way, Bush just *cannot* win with some people.
One thing I always admired about Bush was that he seemed to understand that as President, he is the *one* elected official who represents *all* of us, regardless of political affiliation. While I don't think he'll ever budge on abortion or terror (his conscience wouldn't allow it), I do think he's always been pretty flexible in his domestic policy and isn't afraid to try new things or make concessions. Frankly, even though I don't always agree with him (as a conservative), I do at least think that he is behaving the way I think a president ought to - acting in everybody's interest as Head of State/CIC.
You're right though, we'll just have see how this all plays out...

Jan. 14, 2007, 12:04 p.m.Hmmm ... I'll believe it when I see it. In spite of what enharmonix said, if Bush does take a stand that America does need to make changes to reduce global warming, I certainly won't criticize it. I may want to take his temperature (to make sure he isn't running a fever) but I'll be happy to hear it.

Jan. 14, 2007, 1:38 p.m.scientific data on this subjrct is extremely subjective depending on your bias, in the 60's we were all going to freeze to death in 20 yrs, now Al Bore wants us to believe we are going to explode in a firey death, while the temp in the northeast " my home" has been above average this yr, last yr it was the opposite, so who's to believe that we are causing or can do anything to effect the outcome of mother nature.

Searunner52
Jan. 14, 2007, 2:03 p.m.I would tend to say that the scientific data on this topic is far more conclusive than subjective. The overwhelming majority of scientists that work in these areas have all clearly stated that the earths climate is rapidly changing, in a strong part because of the actions of its inhabitents, and not because this is a natural cyclical thing. The few, and I emphasis few, scientists that have come out with contradictory positions can be directly linked to those corporations and industries that have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo! They are more interested in doing only what effects their bottom line and not the environment! Your reference to Al Gore clearly shows the position you have taken and to base your comments on by two years is shallow in the least! I too have lived in the NE and can well remember the Atlantic Ocean freezing for miles, in some cases off shore as far south as the southern tip of NJ. I can remember 110" of snow in MA a little more than (cont)

Jan. 14, 2007, 3:59 p.m.If Bush takes this turn, I for one will fight any push to label it as flip-flopping. I happen to agree with John Kerry on this point. Kerry recently said that, "There's something much worse than being accused of "flip-flopping": refusing to flip when it's obvious that your course of action is a flop."

Jan. 14, 2007, 3:59 p.m.If Bush changes his position on global warming, get ready for multi-billion contracts for environmental repair for his buddies in the energy business. Even so, it would be good news. Exxon is dropping funding of its own 'hired guns' anti-global warming scientists, which is also good news.

Jan. 14, 2007, 4:56 p.m.Why do you think Rachel Carson is burning in Hell? Paul Ehrlich was merely trying to update the work of Malthus.
Just because we don't understand everything about something doesn't mean we shouldn't try to understand it. Plus, we can see some trends.
Why does everything you write have to have some sort of nasty comment in it? Can't you make your point without name calling?

Jan. 14, 2007, 5:16 p.m."the arrogance of LIBERAL MAN or SHINNING MAN! if you prefer, that we can understand the true nature of nature is stunning"
I think that the fact that they don't know exactly how nature will handle things in every way is why they are so scared. Have you ever played Jenga, you never know until it's to late, when the whole thing will come crashing down, or which way it will fall, thats what makes it a game. I think we should stop pulling out the little wooden blocks until we know exactly what we are doing. because this isn't a game we can afford to lose.

Jan. 15, 2007, 1:48 a.m."BEWARE the enviro-idiot who promotes alternative energy! he really means HORSE AND BUGGY!"
What a truly stupid statement! Dammed few people in the environmental movement in this day and age are "Luddites!" who advocate doing away with all the benefits of a technological society, but there are better ways to approach things.
More energy from the sun falls across this Nation on a daily basis that all that has been produced by the use of fossil fuels and yet dammed little is being done to harness that power. R Buskminster Fuller stated in his work "Critical Path" that were we to simply place low-wind turbines on the top of every electric transmission tower we would reap more energy than we could consume in a quarter century!
There are scores of alternative just like this that are available to us and while individually they may not solve our problems collectively they certainly can!
