U.S. military expert Chalmers Johnson argues the catastrophe in Iraq and the staggering cost of running a military that stretches across 130 countries on 737 bases may finally cost America its empire. I believe that we're close to a tipping point right now. What happened to the Soviet Union between 1989 and 1991 could easily be happening to us for

      One Nation under God Indivisible........

These are growing pains. Don't underestimate the American people, the business and productivity we have here. Travel overseas just a little bit and see the ugliness of the other world and lack of freedom.

We have a bit of a leadership problem. Just Temporary!!

        jrannis,

In which parts of the world have you traveled? I've traveled in Europe and Asia, and found the countries I visited quite free and very beautiful.

Besides, if the other world is ugly and lacks freedom, perhaps it should just be left alone to worry about itself.

Our leadership is fine, but we have produced a couple generations of people who think the Government will take care of them like a Nanny. If we return the 20 million criminal invaders, and begin to take in legal immigrants we will prevent a stagnation of the population.

          "Our leadership is fine"

Don't say stuff like that in the morning. I just about choked up my breakfast....

I actually agree with some of the rest of your statement but when are we going to start with the evictions? Why do we tolerate anyone living here illegally? Doesn't make sense.

Actually installing fascist tenets like, secret police, illegal bugging of average American citizens, pre-emptive strike against a country not attacking us, SEVERE conflicts of interest (Cheney/Halliburton), closed-door meetings, testimony not under oath, creation of ultra-consrvative false news propaganda tv channels, coercion on so many levels- favoring the interests of the minority of the powerful over the common man, torture of American citizens without trial or counsel, destructive cronyism, and the suspension of habeus corpus (read: suspension of American law) and many, many other attacks on our American-made freedoms and rights might be considerd more than a little bad leadership.

They are not checking on me. We are boring. Why would they check on you, do you have Terrorist friends? Democrats took away all rights in WW2, and we lived with it. Stop running around with criminalk elements, or cheating on your income tax, or planning the overthrow of the elected Government, and you have nothing to fear.

We all break laws everyday. In my local area they have been pulling people over on the Interstate for moving violations and searching their vehicles with no other cause. This with multiple patrol cars and canine units. The local papers have even championed this effort. If you are doing nothing wrong why should you have anything to worry about? They just want to look through your possesions.

What kind of a country are we becoming?

But this is America. We are supposed to be free from unlawful searches and seizures. That is quite clearly in the Constitution. How can they possibly say that going two miles an hour over the limit gives them the right to search a vehicle, yet apparently it does?

You keep living in your fantasy world. Someday the authorities may not agree with your point of view and you will be the one targeted. George Orwell would certainly wonder what was wrong with you, giving up your rights without so much as a fight.

                aniokly,

How do you know that they are not checking on you? Do they announce it? If I haven't received any letters telling me that they aren't, does that mean that they are checking on me?

It is so scary that people not only believe, but start repeating, this flawed logic.

What do I have to fear? I will tell you what I have to fear....the same thing the founding fathers were afraid of when they wrote protection from government big brother stuff into the Constitution.

If you don't believe it is in there then why don't you read it sometime instead of listening to liars like Limbaugh and FOX News.

Yes the democrats may have suspended american rights in WWII, but that was because Nazi germany was on the brink of taking over Europe, and because america was attacked by Japan.....

Right now american was attacked by a terrorist agency, 3000 lives lost. SO we attacked two countries. One having nothing to do with Al-queda.

It'd be a lot more cost-effective if America could divest herself of so many holdings and be more self-sufficient.

So, in Iraq for example, the focus needs to be on the finding and executing the quickest and safest way to wrap up our involvement over there, which will also be safest for the host country's citizens. The sooner we can disenthral ourselves of these heavy commitments, the better.

I think The U.S. should start practicing a little bit of isolationism. We can't police the whole planet, nor can we convince everybody to. We should start acting in our own best interests if we are to beat china's growing power.

"There is nothing wrong in America that can't be fixed with what is right in America." -President William Jefferson Clinton

George W. Bush and company are what's wrong in America today, and the Constitution provides the solution to put things right again...IMPEACHMENT!

This is an excellent article, gatitabonitasen; thanks for posting it. I'm afraid some people won't have the patience to read it all (which is a pity), but it's definitely worth the time needed to read every word.

a civil war cant be ended by an umpire trying to calm both sides. somebody has to win a civil war. the US, having achieved all stated goals of proving there are no wmds, regime change, elections, and security force training, it is time to make a decision:

either pick a side and help them win (which would be crazy as either choice would affect us detrimently in foriegn affairs ) or get out and let them finish it.

What goes up must come down, world is losing confidence in a country will certain make people to look for elsewhere to do Business, if the US is is on top because there are a lot of countries trust America, today the trust is being eroded, all the economic signs are that this is a sinking super power, perhaps a decade's time everything will come to an end.

It seems to me that bankrupting and destroying the nation we knew as the USA is in fact the obvious goal of the current administration. No one could be that incompetent accidentally.

Even a chimp would randomly do something right eventually.
