No one knows, but Sens. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., and Dick Durbin, D-Ill., think it's time to find out.

Glad to see the effort being made. NIEs do tend to be incisive and explore things in a sober fashion.
I do take issue with the article's claim that the NIE on Iraq's WMDs was largely responsible for getting us into the Iraq war, though. Today we know that is not true. We know that a small Pentagon skunk works headed by Douglas Feith and answering to Wolfowitz and Rumsfeld and thereby ultimately to Bush/Cheney redacted, omitted, cherry picked and in some cases flat rewrote material collected by the nation's intelligence community in order to build what we now clearly recognize to be a flawed case for war.
I can only hope that if this NIE on the security threat of climate change goes forward, Bush doesn't nominate some loyal fund raiser whose only credentials are being a neocon idealogue to edit it down till it says that supporting Exxon Mobil Corp. is our only hope for a brighter future.

KingOfTruthiness. I would guess both senators agree that education is important for the young, keeping America strong and competitive in the world. Therefore, according to your sweeping theory, educating our youth is a scam and is wrong.
They probably agree that we need a strong and well-trained armed forces for national defense. Therefore, maintaining a national defense is a scam, and wrong.
They might even agree that trial by a jury of your peers and rules of evidence are a good thing, protecting us form a gestapo police state. Therefore, our legal system is a scam, and wrong. Cops should be empowered to just shoot anyone they want whenever they want, no questions asked.
In this theory, your truthiness has reached a new and astounding level.

You're right...we were lucky...but the Pacific and Asia were not!!! They got hammered in the very same way the Atlantic Tropics were in the two previous seasons.....
Bush did not cause Katrina...(year before last)he just failed to adequately respond to it. The levis were not the only things that failed!

The reason they predicted all those hurricanes last year, and they did not come. Was due to Dust/Sand Storms in Africa, that floated over the atlantic, thus changing the estimations taken PRIOR to said dust/sand storms.
This is something people(especially florida residents) have been aware of for YEARS. In simple terms, the Sand removes the Moisture, which lessons hurricane power.

Global warming is a hoax. A hypothesis, an unproven theory. No one believes it, and the more we ignore it the louder, and more shrill the "true believers" become. If this were truly a crisis surely to God the disciples of Algore, and Algore himself would not be using 20 more resourses then the average household. He and Hanoi John, and Teraaaaaaaza would sell a couple of those houses, one of their boats, and their fleet of cars, and start doing what they want the rest of us to do. Right? Right.

If it is such a hoax....why are the most prominant scientists of the day proclaiming the truth of global warming? The UN and the IPCC
If it is such a hoax, why are the only nay-sayers, oil, coal or energy industrialists (or stockholders)......where are their scientific studies and facts....
Al Gore is a human and only one of the people trying to move us toward a more rational and intelligent way of life.... Blaming him for bringing this issue to international attention...does not change the fact or the reality...
Is Al Gore 100% correct on each and all points...probably not...but he is absolutely correct there is a very serious problem....whether man-made or God-made...and in any event the intelligent approach is to learn to live with it.

If Global Warming is determined to be threat to national security how will the Bush administration respond to it?
I forsee a spate of extraordinary renditions of the global warming evil doers, coupled with aggressive interrogations followed by a pre-emptive invasion of Greenland and Antartica to secure the ice caps.
It will be the Global War on Global Warming or GWOGW.

There is no concensus on Glo-bull warming among prominent scientists. Yes, it is a hoax, and most people are not buying it. In fact there is no evidence that it is a crisis at all. I will give it a second look when Gore, and Hanoi John, and all those other people with multi-homes, fleets of cars, and a private planes start saving the earth's valuable resources. Any takers?

What I don't understand is that if global warming is a giant hoax, why are so many politicians and scientists pushing for it? What's to gain from making people believe the Earth is warming at increased levels? Who's to gain?
No one is going to push bad science if there's no gain for themselves or a bigger whole (besides selling documentaries)...unless they really believe this is happening...idk.

Hey IDIOTS!! global warming does not just mean we all get hot and sweaty! Ice at the poles are melting at alarming rates! The cold as much a part of it as anything. I also think maybe the earthquakes ar epart of it too. If the poles are warming, just imagine what the center of the earth is doing.

GW isn't a security threat near as much as W and all his see-no-evil monkeys. Look at the nice new Nam they've given us, and all for a mere 3 trillion deficit. Bin Ladin must be rolling with laughter every day and night. After all, he tried to kill two hundred thousand on our soil, and got away with thousands lost and billions in damage, the greatest single strike against our country ever, and he sits laughing snug and safe, a messiah to his followers. W can't even get mobile homes down to Orleans. They sit and rot in fields while homeland security passes the buck.

OMG, the earth has warmed one degree in a century. Omg, I better go wash out some Mayonnaise jars, and buy more of those funny light bulbs. Does Algore still have three houses, Hanoi John four houses, John Edwards a house almost as big as a football field? Again, Americans are not buying the Glo-bull. Go peddle it in Europe, and stay there, because it will soon get to scary for the lightweights here.
