Obstinance occurs when you find that the reasons for taking an action were incorrect or invalid and you DON'T change your actions.

The members of congress calling to leave are the ones being mature and adult not sticking to a bad decision just to try and look good when all the facts now point to it being a bad decision.

BTW if the troops lose funding you can blame it on GWB since he has the ability to sign the bill and then can move forward and prove a need for us to be there before the August 2008 timline of the house bill hits. Remember the senate date is non-binding so he can ignore that.

From my perspective he can't prove sufficient progress to have congress extend the time beyond 08-2008 then we should not be there even today, but I will give him that 16 months to show progress before pulling the funding for this ill conceived invasion.

AB- the only time I bought into it was when Gen. Powell assured us it was absolutely necessary, and I believed that he had enough integrity not to take a position he did not believe in. I fully expected some sort of WMD to hit our troops, but didn't happen, thankfully. I then thought, why wasn't that the case? If you hate America, you know we're coming, we will kill or capture, then kill you, why move the weapons elsewhere? It made no sense, and I have not forgiven Colin or Bush for that pre-emptive attack that was not needed at that time.

Colin Powell was duped just like many of the rest! Bush and Co. used him and his credible standing to hoodwink the public. Mr. Powell no doubt regrets his part in leading our soldiers into that hellacious quagmire, and resents having been lied to and left to twist in the wind when the truth came out! That is why he vacated his position within the administration and has given up on politics. Honor is of extreme importance to any soldier, and thanks to Bush and his crime family, Powell's name will never carry the same degree of honor and integrity it once did. He is another casualty of Bush and the Iraq War!

"That's what we're supposed to do -- we're supposed to talk out our differences," Bush said. "I'm looking forward to the meeting. I hope the Democratic leadership will drop its unreasonable demand for a precipitous withdrawal." A meeting to talk about differences does no good without an open mind. Bush is playing into Osama's hand, he knows we can't be beat by so called war...his goal is to have us keep dumping money down this black hole until we have no more money or resources. As long as we stay over there, we will have no peace.

they want us to pull out. If they planned on attacking again on OUR soil, do you really think they want all our defences over here to be up, stong and in working order? They nare doing all they can to run us down and wear us out so that we have no defence when they decide to come again.

Your all brawn no brains attitude is the same as Rumsfelds and look where that got us. What you really want is for me to keep paying taxes for a war that I don't believe was necessary so that you can thump your chest and show the world how tough you are. Have you been talking ot Al-Qaeda/Osama bin Laden lately? Your claim about the midterm elections is total BS and an easy cop out. You are the "paper tiger"

You, sir are a moron! Every time I see you on here is to attack other peoples opinion. Try opening your mind, or not. I believe you enjoy the taste of your foot.

And just how do you KNOW what OBL is thinking? You are ASSUMING you know. Last I checked al Qaeda wasn't publishing a mission statement or a strategic outline. Your opinion is not a fact no matter how well informed you think you are.

avatar

Actually, AQ officials have said SEVERAL times they know that they cannot beat the US on the battlefield so they will beat them at home in the press. AQ knows they don't have to defeat the American military, all they have to do is survive until we quit fighting. It is how insurgency operates ALWAYS work throughout History.

Do you think the US gained its independence from England because we were stronger? Non-sense, we had exterior forces working inside the colonies to destablize British control (namely the French and Spanish). Washington knew that he didn't have to beat the British army, he just had to not lose. Soon enough, the British will was broken and they gave up.

AQ will win when the Democrats decide to quit fighting them. And I am just waiting for the negative votes to come in for telling the truth.

avatar
Reply

Little of that is factual. Al Queda is not an insurgency. The British didn't quit because their will was broken and Al Queda doesn't have a spin doctor holding press conferences with the western press.

I have never heard a single Democrat suggest that we quit fighting Al Queda. Have you? Proof please.

I HAVE noticed that the repug WH sent most of our forces into a country that had nothing to do with 9-11, was not under the control of Islamic extremists and posed no immediate threat to us. This was done as the Repug WH drew down and ignored the fight in Afganistan against our real enemy, Al Queda.

The Dems have not decided to quit fighting Al Queda, the Repugs have diverted the fight elsewhere.

You'll get negative votes for making crap up.

"But liberals do run out of courage" You mean liberals like FDR and the hundreds of thousands of American GIs that won WWII? The tens of thousands of American GIs that fought and died in Vietnam? The ones that when their country called, they answered. The ones that didn't have "other priorities?" The ones that actually showed up for duty? You mean those liberals and those democrats?

Your silly chest thumping presumes that because we don't thump our chests and cheer on incompetence and lies, that we are cowards. It's stupid, silly and insulting to the memories and experiences of a whole lot of veterans.

You're an ass and a blowhard without a lick of sense.

The worst thing we can do for OBL is to pull out of Iraq. That would allow us to put the needed troops back in Afghanistan where he exists.

While we are putting so many men and so much material in Iraq we cannot do what needed to be done in Afghanistan and that is destroy or caputre OBL and his inner circle. Can't do that when your troops are in another country in the middle of a civil war.

Lets get the heck out of Iraq, get back to the job in Afghanistan, eliminate OBL and the threat he still possesses toward this country.

I think OBL is in Pakistan

His last known whereabouts were in Afghanistan, but he ain't there no mo', thanks to the handing over of responsibility for his capture to less than motivated locals, and Pakistan's refusal to patrol its borders shortly after 9/11

avatar
Reply

That may be true.

On the other hand Pakistan borders Afghanistan and not Iraq. If we want to go after him we need to be as close as possible to where he is.

If it is Pakistan it is in the border areas with Afghanistan and I would say lets go get him and let our puppet dictor in Pakistan try to stop us and lose the only support there is for his staying in power.

They don't want to catch OBL.

right around the time Bush said he 'didn't think about him much' and 'no longer a priority', the division of the CIA devoted solely to finding and apprehendeding OBL was disbanded.

in other words, the man was serious bout what he said

Bush is right, the troops shouldn't be caught in the middle of this. Which is exactly why the democrats are trying to bring them home. What Bush clearly wants is funding for the defense companies he already has invested in. On another note:

Just out of curiousity- imagine if your Bush, sr. On one hand you're so proud your son has become president of the most powerful nation in the world. On the other hand, your son is THE worst president in history and a complete tool. This is why I am never having kids.

I love it when people like you A.K.A. war mongers NOT in the military try tell tell the rest of us how great we are to be in this war. Why don't you get over there and fight??? It's a lot easier to talk about it isn't it?? We got the guy that made his daddy mad, now lets get out!! Oh and If you Really gotta have someone to kill, how about the guy we were looking for (Bin Laden) before GW decided to go after the guy daddy couldn't get. It amazes me that nobody wonders how we couldn't have caught him by now. Of course if the Bush family & Bin Laden family were not in business ventures together, he would have been found within a month.

But hey lets stay in Vietnam, Iraq , whatever you wanna call this war. Not much difference is there???

Constructive criticism is a good thing. Instead, the relentless attacks upon the Prez seem only waged for political gain. There is no wise substance to the pull out mentality for the conflict in Iraq. Instead, it is harming our troops & those of the coalition forces & emboldening the enemies of freedom.

If the House & Senate would cooperate in seeking solutions with the Prez, the conflict would end much sooner. -Rev. S

"embolding the enemies of freedom"

these people blow themselves up for their "cause." they can't get any more "bold." what we needed to worry about from day one is a course that would draw terrorist recruits. the longer we stay, the worse this will get.

and if you think we can actually gain control of Iraq, ask the russians how afghanistan went. take a look at the Iraq-Iran war and it's million plus pointless deaths. take a look at the Cashmire fight that's been going on for a hundred years. ask rome how easy it was to control Jerusalem.

Genocide or leave. Those are our choices in the Middle East.

Yeah, it's sad to admit that we CAN'T help them. But cons, look at it this way, at least you tried. If our troops stay then it will be a loss. WE HAVE NOTHING TO GAIN!

Oh yeah, forgot about the oil.

"these people blow themselves up for their 'cause.' they can't get any more 'bold.'" -ades

Yes, there is something desperately wrong with many Muslim schools, that teach their students how to hate others to the point of suicide mass killings. But their "cause is to vanquish any attempts to provide freedom in the Middle East. As a matter of fact, their goal is to dominate the world, including the US & to not allow freedom of religion, only allowing adherence to Islam. But which one? Sunni or Shiite? So they kill each other.

But not all Iraqis feel this way. They voted to have freedom of a democratic state. And the opposition doesn't wish to acknowledge this, so they wickedly murder everyone, including women & children for their "cause." I don't call this boldness; I call it idiocy. But they are emboldened to follow their wicked "cause" & would eventually bring it to our shores. -Rev. S

There is absolutely nothing of any worth in Iraq that is worth the life of another American soldier let alone the hundreds, if not thousands, that will be killed over there before Bush pulls his head out of his ass and brings them home - nothing!

avatar

Well rev, "cooperate in seeking solutions" is simply "my way or the highway" to Bush.

You are just repeating the nonsensical talking points like "emboldening the enemies of freedom." Focusing on Al Queda and the Taliban will not embolden them, it'll be an "oh shlt! Here they come!" moment for them.

How is saving the lives of our troops harmful? They are not political pawns, they are real people that bleed real blood. Bush and his supporters use nonsense like "owe it to veterans and their families to pass the war-spending bill he wants." How does that work exactly? Congress owes it to veterans to create more casualties and more veterans?

This pres doesn't listen to constructive criticism and he deserves a lot more relentless attacks while we still are able to criticize and speak freely.

MonkerBiz:

There is no constructive solution offered by the opposition over the desperate situation, except "pull out." Who wants the loss of a single soldier? But we dishonor those that gave their lives and the current troops, who in vast majority are in support of being there. Why don't we allow their viewpoint to be heard?

One solution is to insist on the current elected Iraqi government to come down hard on anyone who insists on fomenting the violence, including Muqtada al-Sadr or any other Imam or cleric, who is in fact an accessory to mass murder of their citizens. At the very least they need to be held under arrest for war crimes as was done in Bosnia. Their's is not freedom of speech; it is aiding & abetting of the wicked wholesale murder of legal citizens. -Rev. S

nothing emboldens like incompetence

It's a win-win for the terrorists, thanks to this foolish administration.

We stay, we keep losing lives and resources, for little to no gain[except 'face-saving' stick-to-it-ness...oh boy] for an indefinite period of time

We leave, they can claim victory, which enough will believe to MAKE it a victory--in new terrorist recruits.

Thanks in part to the W.H. propaganda machine, that amoral ruthless butterchurn slathering its wares on the lenses of people's perception, there is a great deal of confusion over what Iraq is, what it's about, what our objectives are there, etc.

This is not a mistake. This is an unclear path chosen to dodge responsibility by setting nebulous, murky goals that help to keep the claims of unilateral failure at bay.

If you don't know what the finish line is, how do you know if I've lost?

No definable goals, no accountability, no clear 'winning or losing' we americans relate to so well.

Iraq is rightly called a quagmire, but it can also be called a London fog, with so many failing to be able to see thru it to understand what a global disaster it really is.

I'm not a politician or involved in politics other than keeping abreast of the issues and casting my vote when the time comes. The only "gain" I'm looking for is the gaining of our troops back on American soil, and the gaining of a real, objective, intelligent, for the people leader in the White House instead of the dud we've got now.

The Bush strategy is working so well that the Iraqi government is disintegrating as we speak. Sure lets send more and more troops because that is the answer "Stay and Die and Die". However Patton, Lee, and Alexander all retreated in the face of an uncontrollable disaster. Live to the fight another day was their motto. The trouble is Bush will never admit he's made a mistake and he keeps doing what clearly isn't working. The Iraqi people will never stand up for themselves if we are there to do everything for them. Four years of incompetence and death and the only thing being offered as a solution is more of the same? Forgive me if I object.

Yes, the government is falling apart since the main sponsor of domestic terrorism in Iraq (Sadr) has decided that his boys need to take their balls and go home while Sadr is hiding in Iran.
