During the 2nd GOP debate, Fox News' Brit Hume sets up a hypothetical situation where 3 terrorist attacks occur at malls in major cities. A 4th attack is thwarted and the would-be attacker, who we know has information about an impending attack is captured and taken to Guantanamo. The candidates are asked if they believe torture should be used.

If that "hypothetical" situation happened I would be all for torture.

Torture is very ineffective for getting information. If you torture someone enough they will tell you what you want to hear, regardless of a factual base.

I guess I'm so old I remember WWII and how we were supposed to be the good guys who respected other people. I guess that's gone. It's completely appalling that these wrong headed evildoers would even contemplate torture. Why are they running for president? This is completely outrageous.

Re: GOP Debate II: Is Torture OK?

The problem with torture, in these hypothetical instances, is bogus and biased..... (quote) "A 4th attack is thwarted and the would-be attacker, WHO WE KNOW has information about an impending attack is captured..." (end quote, emphasis supplied).

Is this whole deal the "Inquisition" of the 3rd millennium? Usually, we only 'torture' people (deprive them of life or liberty and confine them in a small room with a gorilla) after a finding (due process) of guilt.

Nevertheless, the problem with torture is to apply the technique to both innocent and highly suspect

individuals. The problem being, that we usually don't know one (the innocent) from the other (the diabolical).

It's a tough call. I believe that torture, if utilized, should only be employed as a last resort and only as a result of a court order. Without the 'checks and balances' of judicial oversight we can very well morph into a lynch mob waiving a flag.
