Parents who lose children, whether through accident or illness, inevitably wonder what they could have done to prevent their loss. When my son was killed in Iraq earlier this month at age 27, I found myself pondering my responsibility for his death.

An outstanding OPED.
"When it comes to Iraq, money ensures that the concerns of big business, big oil, bellicose evangelicals and Middle East allies gain a hearing. By comparison, the lives of U.S. soldiers figure as an afterthought."

The sad thing about war is that its almost always started by a person who will not fight that war! People who fight in a war will do their best to avoid starting a war.
Our leaders today are among the worse we as a nation has seen...those of you who continue to stand by them are as much responsible for what is happening as they.
These people were not enemies we these leaders brought the enemy there. I believe is someone do something to us we do something to them but the last i heard Ben Ladin is not in Iraq.
Mr. Bush and this entire administrations are criminals at best, they are cold blooded murderers. When was the last time you see their children defending and protecting our nation.

I have lost love ones there and as long as i live i will never forgive the GOPers for the betrayal of our nation...to me your party is nothing more than egomaniacs with the smarts of a led tank. I love our troops and you can say i am against them because i want them home but it seems to me that YOU GOPers are the ones who are against out troops.

This notion that we are willing the terrorist makes me laugh...no disrespect intended but these parents and those who repeat this crap should know that we had already lost 3000 solders before the November election. They were killing our boys and girls long before the DEMS call for the removal of our troops, we are doing so because they are killing more and more everyday.
I hate these guys not only for what they did to our country but what they are doing to our citizens.
They are dividing us and in us i mean the poor and trust me is you call yourself a member of the middle class you are the biggest joke you are poor just not as poor as those living on the streets. But think about it you lose your job and it is said that in less than 6 months you will be homeless.
These people are all tricksters they are willing to kill our kids so that they can make more money, and then they make heartless statements such as solders die in wars and we lost more in this or that war.

When you sign up for the armed forces, you know you might go to war. What part of this is so hard ot understand? The young men and women who have given their lives are the ultimate heros and will never be forgotten.

Well SpinOutDave,
It is when you go to war for no reason that upsets people. Why did we go to Iraq, was Bin Laden there????? Did Iraq attack the WTC ?? No, we are there because G.W.'s dad didn't get the job done, not to mention this nation is FULL of oil.
You said: "The young men and women who have given their lives are the ultimate heros and will never be forgotten."
Neither will the kids that fought in Vietnam. Once again a senseless war that didn't even help our economy.
It a shame you or someone you love isn't fighting in Iraq, I'm sure you would a little less happy with all our kids dying over there then.

NoSpin â;; Again, don't get me wrong, I think if you sign up you should expect to go to war and, possibly die in the process. However, you also expect that your president will be smart enough to make wise decisions and, listen to those who know a thing or two about war.
This Idiot had the best military mind of our times in Colin at his finger tips, what did he do when given what is now consider very sound advise. They marginalize him, they set him up to lie to the world and most of all they didn't listen to the military man, one who was wounded in not one, not two, not 3 wars for his country. Instead they listen to the guy that have never even been to one war! How this makes sense is beyond me. He won a war for his country as the head of our arm-forces

The United States can not resolve everyone's problems. I don't believe we should have been there to begin with! Of course, I'm not tied in with Bush or Big Business Oil interest!
Iraq and the middle east should start resolving their own problems. "We!", the people of the United States have enough problems of our own to resolve without letting our son's as a sacrifice for others who are not willing to deal with their own conflicts. I'm a proud American Veteran and I believe we are the most powerful country in the world. I was in awe as I watched the World Trade Center being destroyed while visiting Australia. Who could have been so stupid? It was not just the United States that was assaulted.
I was actually ready to re-enlist then, but not for the reasons we seem to be there now!

Quick comment on Bushes big oil insentive. Bush is a Texan with Texan and gulf of mexico oil money. Assuming that you mean he wants to be there to get more oil into the US cheaper. Why the less oil that comes in from overseas the more oil we'll use from US. If the Mid East stops the exportation of oil it would just make Bush richer. The less oil for sale the more expensive the oil that is for sale will be. So basicly Bush invaded Iraq so he and his buseness partners can lose money. Isn't there a lot easyier ways to lose money. Now I know that as soon as I post this there will belike fifteen people who will throw out some basic lines that you hear all the time and most likley bring up somthing completly unrelated that makes Bush look bad. Look I'm not saying that Bush is a great president infact I'd rank him the third worst president in the history of the US. But the oil thing makes no sense. BUSINESS RULE ONE SUPPLY VS DEMAND. Just think about it. Please.

No sir, your protestations were not in vain. Perhaps they have not come to fruition yet, but they shall. Sadly, regretably, it is too late for your son and thousands of other brave young men and women. However, if we stop, if we allow the powers that be to continue this war with no regard to the will of the people how many thousands of more brave young men and women will die needlessly?
On this day before Memorial Day let us all remember the brave men and women - past and present - who have made the ultimate sacrifice for us. Let us take this opportunity to be rededicated to the task before us. Your's is not a voice in the wilderness, sir.

I really hope that this madness ends soon. How many more of our greatest resources (our brave men and women in the military) have to be offered up before the big business bastards that are raping our country are satisfied? I wonder where all the neocons smartasses that write about how wonderful and brave their white house masters are today? Most likely getting an early start on their holiday plans. It is obvious that none of them have an iota of shame.

This was heartbreaking. I just can't even imagine, as a mother losing my child, and to lose them in this manner..just adds extra...can't find the words.
When I heard on the news today that Bush was going to honor the troops on Memorial Day..I'm sorry to say it makes me feel ill.
why are they waiting to bring our troops home?? what will be gained by another moment? more importantly-how many more lives will be lost, maimed, or ruined families and friends of those lost?
Those in power are not making any sacrifices, they sure do benefit in many ways tho. Sickening.

Let us hope that we shall one day not only end the war but end the systems that drive us to perpetual war for profit.

...only 6 to 7% are terrorists, like the numbers we had confined in Abu Ghraib. Why do you accept Dubya's lies that we are just fighting terrorists? This is sectarian violance and civil war and the Iraqis predominantly want us out of it. God, what a path of failure for so many stupid americans to actually accept the lies of this continually lying president!

"The soldiers that willingly give their lives for this war do not suffer. They do not die in vein either."
What a terrible, heartless thing to say. Of copurse they sufferd. And yes, Kool Aid drinker, they are dying in vain. This is a needless war. Bush has never served his country honorably, (his records are lost), and Cheney got five draft deferals (he had other priorities). This war was started by a pack of heartless butchers who have never fought a war.
These people disgust mre.

"What a horrible way to wake up to the truth of what politicians have become."
They became that way an awful long time ago.
Only one senator, Bob LaFollette, opposed US entry into WWI. He took the podium and BLISTERED the senate over what he said was their cynical support of the children of the working class dying to support a war to make the rich richer. He did so despite being assured that the fix was in and that opposition to this "war to end all wars" was political suicide.
He was later reelected by a landslide.
But he was not a typical politician. How many sat and listened, and AGREED silently with his words, but voted for war out of political expediency?

I notice that two people sunk this story.
They apparently have NO consideration and NO compassion for the families that have lost loved ones in this war or have loved ones that are permanently disabled - either physically or psychologicaly, or both - because of this so-called "war".
How utterly hateful can people be?
The deaths of 3500 of our soldiers is horrible. Even worse, the ones that manage to survive come home to lousy medical care and to homelessness and bankruptcy and divorce.
This has got to STOP, but I don't know how it can be stopped before January 21, 2009.
