Legislation that would have required longer troop rests between combat deployments fell today to a Republican filibuster, but GOP fissures over President Bush's war policies continued to widen, with two more Republican senators signing on to binding troop withdrawal dates.

I don't think either party supports the troops or they would not be in the position they now find themselves in.

Yup..those Repukes sure know how to support our troops. Send them over with inferior equipment, keep them over there longer than promised, cut their veterans benefits and provide them with minimal medical care IF they come back alive; and failing all else, keep them over until they get killed. Yes, yes, yes, those Neocons are true patriots, unlike those traitors who even QUESTION Dumbya's policies in Iraq. And then there's that pesky, brand new NIE that shows Al Quaeda gaining strength on the Afghan/Pakistani border. That's not fair, we're in IRAQ! Bet it's just like that 94 page NIE that strongly advised AGAINST the invasion of Iraq. According to Thomas E. Ricks in his book, "Fiasco", neither Rice nor Bush EVER read the entire 94 page report. They ONLY read the 5 page executive summary! Rice, at least, should have read the entire National Intelligence Estimate. Dumbya is excused....it didn't have any pictures in it. Ya' gotta love this Pres.

Democrats loath the Military. If they supported the troops they would not be giving aid, and comfort to their enemies. Every time they talk about Surrender the enemy tries to kill more infidels. Democrats should be taken out, given a cigarette, and a blindfold, and shot. In better days they would be, traitors.

Not just the hate.....the ill conceived logic!
Surrender indeed!? Who exactly would we surrender to? The terra-ists?
How will a victory be defined and what will be the positive associated connotations be?
Isnt that the trillion dollar question that no one has the answer to - other than implied speculation? Is that worth thousands of dead Americans?
The supporters and apologists have no answers other than "The terra-ists are coming to get us if we leave."
USA - Leading by fear since 2001!

The majority of the military doesn't want to be there. Granted there are the crazy ones but most of the ones in my unit don't/didn't want to go. So the most support you could show us would be getting us and keeping us home unless there actually is a threat to national security.

Democrats do not loathe the military. There are more Democrat veterans serving in Congress than Republicans. Republicans loathe the military as you can see by the lack of support for our troops safety and benefits. That's the difference between real military service and being an armchair general.

Give it a break! Neither party hates the troops. Is all there is to being a troop, safety and benefits? Get real! All Harry Reed cares about is consolidating power in the Democratic party. The Senators are the arm chair generals. Notice how the measures being introduced all involve tactical decisions which should be made in the field or by the commander in chief. The only and I repeat only reasons these measures are being introduced in the Senate are to embarrass the President and to get the Republicans on record as being opposed to what is proposed as a troop benefit so the leftists can cry, "see how they hate the military"

You are absolutely correct that the Democrats give comfort to their enemies. The Republicans are their greatest and only enemy and the Democrats for some reason, give comfort to them over and over again.

maroonie, only in the fevered mind of the 29%ers do the Democrats loath the military.
It is the Rabid Republicans Right Wing Radicals who loath the will of the American people.
Impeachment, remove and procecute the war criminals Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld.

Please show the American people how the situation for the last 4 years has helped anyone. Please provide evidence. Yes, I'll even allow a Haliburton example.
When you refer to infidels, are you referring to our troops?
I am worried about your overzealous use of the lowly comma.

I've blocked your comments but sometimes I have to read them to keep everything in context and not destroy the flow of ideas in the postings. In your reply to questionseverything you state, "...Democrats should be taken out, given a cigarette, and a blindfold, and shot. In better days they would be, traitors." I don't know what your political affiliation is, (I'm guessing A$$hole) but I find your comments repugnant and I think that you should be taken out, given a cigarette, and a blindfold, and shot. I think YOU are a traitor.

Still on the impeachment ticket eh? It's not going to happen. OUr democrat reps are blowing smoke. THey not only cannot produce concrete eveidence of illegal doing by the current admin, they cannot muster the required votes in the houses to proceed. THe dems have promised you a bill of goods that will never be delivered. Much the same as a platform for runnning this country when they have the presidencey in 2008. Still no real plans and no alternatives. Just keep harping and do nothing, propose nothing and we will see how the terrorist like the new kinder gentler administration that wants to discuss why they want to kill us and destroy our way of life. IT is always easier to give up than to face down your enemies.

How can any legal process work if every time somebody is asked questions they refuse to do so under oath or on the record, hide files, or destroy evidence? This alone is enough to remove the from office in a properly run country but it's the US we are talking about, a country where most people still count on a powerless piece of paper, the constitution, to save them.

You and others shout about what are the Democrats doing about the war? Everytime they try to do something they are either filibustered by the Republicans or vetoed by the President. As long as this country continues to vote for Republicans and those who support this foolish war we'll get more of the same.

Nobody should be shot for dissenting opinions!
Get a hold of yourselves, people!
Passions are running high, the political system is broken, and both major parties are completely out of touch.
Don't light the powder keg! Things could spin out of control RIGHT HERE in the USA.
We have got to be better than that.

The article is about how the repugs are opposing R&R for the troops which aniokly somehow is able to blame on dems. But aniokly goes to church every Sunday and afterwards has tea and biscuits with her pastor as she is such a God fearing Christian, This is from one of her previous posts as I am not making this up

since you are so much in favor of war then go enlist and help support the ones on the ground while others get the rest they need. And of course you will stay while the rest of the troops get rest. And if we need more troops you and all the other Bush defenders can stay and fight the war you say is needed.

Do you believe that troops without proper R&R can properly carry out their duties and make the moral decisions we ask of our troops when involved in civilian areas.
Without proper R&R it is not just fewer boots on the ground but the boots that are there cannot do the job they are expected to do properly. Troops not ready and prepared to do their job are worse than no troops at all.
Refusing the R&R is just another way of saying we don't give a darn about you to the troops. The total actions of this administration at this point, supported by a majority of the Republicans, is simply to get past the next 18 months so they can blame the results of these failed policies on the next administration.
Unfortunately for them too many of us are too aware of what is happening to let them get that free ride from responsibility for their misdirected actions.
