Global Warming Starts to Divide G.O.P. Contenders »
Posted by: Aidenag 10 months, 3 weeks agoWhile many conservative commentators and editorialists have mocked concerns about climate change, a different reality is emerging among Republican presidential contenders. It is a near-unanimous recognition among the leaders of the threat posed by global warming. Within that camp, however, sharp divisions are developing.

It's time to stop responding to the childish conservative forums (editorialist and commentator know nothings) & really consider the options we have. On the surface, it looks like it is possible to create coal power we can live with; however, with 75 new coal plants planned here, only 19 plan on doing it in an environmentally responsible way.

Obviously going forward, we can't make decisions that will please everyone. So it's past time to make environmental impact the determining factor on which direction we'll take. And obviously, oversight of fuel industries has to be maintained.

Its an interesting observation. Its refreshing to see they might understand that the shills declaring no human affect are paid for by the energy industry and somewhat biased. At the same time they are also "paid for" by various lobbying groups some that have a stake in the outcome and I tend to be a little hesitant in celebrating. Altho it will be interesting to hear the righties try to spin this, if this continues a year from now I expect to find the 20%ers on here claiming life-time memberships in GreenPeace.

Those 2 dunderheads plan on depending on unproven technology that doesn't take the control away the power industries that got us in this mess in the first place.
It goes to show that the Republicans are just like Jack Kemp said- meeting only in country clubs.

What is the Sierra Club's position on clean coal?
You might be surprised
Can Coal Be Clean?
New ways to burn a dirty old fuel
New technologies and policies can help reduce coal plants' deadly emissions, including carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, mercury, and nitrogen oxides.
What's an environmentalist to do about coal? If you're stuck with an old coal plant in your neighborhood, advocate installing state-of-the-art pollution-control technology. Better yet, call for the plant's replacement with efficiency measures, renewable energy, or a CLEANER COAL FACILITY.
Is the Sierra Club wrong?

As only Nixon could promulgate detente with China, perhaps the dems can promulgate detente with nuclear fission power and open the way for the only serious policy direction for stemming global warming, reducing dependency on hydrocarbons while, at the same time, maintaining (perhaps even improving) a national and international standard of living somewhere above subsistence farming. Solar cells and windmills, while a good addition to the mix, cannot and will not provide industrial quantities of energy sufficient to maintain an industrial economy.

Well it's about time!!! in this case I hope it's still better late then never. Still wonder if it's because they actually realize it's true, or do they realize that's where most of the voting is going to come from...oh well I guess it doesn't make too much of a difference. Still sad about all the division, be much better if we all worked together, maybe more will wake up soon.

"Solar cells and windmills, while a good addition to the mix, cannot and will not provide industrial quantities of energy sufficient to maintain an industrial economy."
jimdoze, although I gave you a positive, I disagree with your comment above.
with cold fusion technology and solar film on high rise buildings, etc, we can support an infrastructure. in other words, the technology is there.
here is a company that produces the solar film i referred to. it trades on the nasdaq with this symbol: XSNX

Eco, "cold fusion" is a complete and utter chimera. If you are referring to fusion as practiced by the sun (which is very very hot and still very very difficult to contain), there is no telling how soon researchers will reach sustainable break-even, let alone industrial application.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fusion_power
XSNX appears to be an interesting company, but it looks, at first glance, like it may have only a tiny piece of the solar wafer puzzle. It trades at almost 9X a very miniscule revenue of 6.88mm. Not a proven company with a proven process. Certainly not for the faint of heart.
In any case, I stand firmly by my comment. Noted environmentalist, James Lovelock (Gaia Hypothesis) agrees: http://www.ecolo.org/media/articles/articles.in...
