Politics – The case for Giuliani's moderation rests mainly on three overblown issues -- guns, gay rights and abortion -- and even in those cases, his deviation from conservative orthodoxy is far milder than is usually suggested. If you've managed to keep liking President Bush, you'd have no trouble loving President Giuliani.
Republicans will nominate their standard bearer, without input from Democrats. We will not pay any attention to the politics of personal destruction. We expect Democrats to try to slime our standard bearer in 08, but it won't matter. Americans choose to vote for the people they research themselves, or who they know from TV. Multi-millions of Americans looked to President Bush, and Rudy Giuliani for strength, and leadership after 9-11. You Remember 9-11, right? They made us stronger. He is a leader, he understands the Islamofascist threat, and is not afraid to put our National Security first.
Curious: Will you feel the same way when the NSA or NTAC comes knocking on your door because of alleged "suspicious activity" in your home? Don't tell me you have nothing to hide so you don't care. It's not about that. Let me rephrase: Is it ok for someone to walk into your home without consent? I'm sure you wouldn't appreciate a total stranger in your house, so why is it ok for a stranger with a badge to do the same thing without having to go through the proper channels?
Why is that one who has been bombarding us with crap like "hillbilly *hore hopper" as a rather offensive name for our last president is now loudly saying that Democrats are engaging in "the politics of personal destruction!" That just makes me ROFLMAO!
The Republican Party is toast in 2008. You are in denial.
aniokly: "Republicans will nominate their standard bearer...We expect Democrats to try to slime our standard bearer"
I don't see how this article is "sliming" anybody. Its main point is that Rudy Giuliani is not a social liberal. You should be happy to hear that, since you wouldn't want to vote for a social liberal, right? According to the article, Rudy Giuliani is a right-wing candidate and his policies will be a continuation of President Bush's policies. How is that offensive to you?
ani,
You have so little understanding of your own party an their candidates it's nearly unbelievable that you're even an American voter, never mind a Republican.
No matter what Rudy has "promised" the religious right, for whom the GOP has courted and been dependent upon for votes, the idea that Rudy is ready, willing, and able to deliver on those "promises" - ban gay marriage (with all the REAL problems this country faces, this the stupidest issue chosen), and put "strict constructionist" on the SC - has as much chance as a snowball in hell.
Rudy may not be a liberal, but he's the closest liberal thing that the GOP has for a candidate since Nelson Rockefeller.
Snowflake Rudy is creature of convenience and fakery.
The guy just tells lies and then spends a lot of time defending them.
Ask any Fireman in New York City, and he will tell you what he really thinks of him.
He will steal anybody's credit if it helps him!
Here is a very interesting point: He constantly reminds us of his "bravery and leadership" in the post 9/11 period in NYC. He was appointed to the 9/11 Commission, BUT NEVER ATTENDED A SINGLE MEETING, AND WENT AWOL FROM DAY 1. The Commission had to warn him that he will lose his membership, and even then he was hiding, making millions on his "Consulting business on Terrorism Security" in cohouts with Bernie Keric, the ex-New York Police Commissioner who is target of criminal investigation for his dirty deeds!
Snowflake Rudy has about as much substance as a snowflake in Summer.
The guy is a phony!
Go ahead and nominate him, if you want another disaster in the White House!
The perception that Giuliani is a liberal Republican is also indicative of our times. After seven years of an extreme right wing government, any candidate that
supports restrictions on guns, gay rights, and is pro-choice would appear liberal.
But don't forget the exaggeration of these same issues is the neoconservative's election strategy; fan the flames of discord over religious and social issues in order to split the anti-war and pro-universal health advocates from voting against the Republican ticket.
"I support marriage between a man and a woman!"
God help us if those kind of inane platforms effectively polarize Americans again and deter our nation from addressing the most urgent issues.
Appealing to the prejudices and differences of the electorate only serves the power-hungry politicians; in essence it reflects a government that cares nothing about the state of the union.

The fanciful notion of Giuliani's liberalism also omits the piece de resistance of his mayorship: his flagrantly undemocratic bid to stay in office for an extra three months after Sept. 11, 2001. During earlier crises, even World War II, U.S. elections had always managed to proceed normally. But Giuliani maneuvered for weeks to remain mayor after his term-limited exit date. Only as normalcy returned to New York did his power grab fail.
Finally, don't forget foreign policy, which has become a social issue in these parlous times. In pledging to carry on the Bush legacy abroad -- seeking to assuage Americans' feelings of vulnerability through brazen nationalism and the ready use of force -- Giuliani taps the same emotions he did with his crusades against crime and vice: a sense that a frustrated people want a no-nonsense leader who will buck the weak-kneed worrywarts, be they urban school officials or Democrats who flinch at warrantless wiretapping.
OTOH My Machiavellian instincts, which I try to keep under control, are prompted to believe that he'd be the perfect divisive candidate to lose Conservative Republican votes.
There are plenty of Republican voters who still look at NYC as an effete, leftist, decadent city, if not quite the archetypal Sodom and Gomorrah of recent repute. His identification with the city is absolute and is his sole claim to "fame".
The 9-11 Commission was a farce. Leaders make up their own minds. They make decisions that are not popular. What came of the 9-11 Comission? Nothing. Nominate Rudy if we want another disaster in the W H? Are you conceding the election to the Republicans before you have chosen your nominee? Intersting.
My favorite: "But he then converted his religious sensibilities into policy, unilaterally withholding a $7 million city subsidy to the Brooklyn Museum of Art." So flippin' what? The museum has a right to display, but the government has no obligation to fund or endorse.
And it is all academic - Rudy won't be the nominee; as soon as other candidates drop out their support will go to anyone but Rudy. I still think Hillary's worst nightmare, Mike Huckabee, is going to get the nomination.
