President Bush suffered the first veto override of his seven-year-old presidency Thursday as the Senate enacted a $23 billion water resources bill despite his protest that it was too expensive. It was the first in a decade that Congress has passed a bill over a presidential veto.

"The vote was 79-14 to pass the bill. Enactment was a foregone conclusion, but it still marked a milestone for a president who spent his first six years with a much friendlier Congress controlled by his Republican Party. Now he confronts a more hostile, Democratic- controlled legislature, and Thursday's vote showed that even many Republicans will defy him on spending matters dear to their political careers."

White House spokeswoman Emily Lawrimore said in the statement, "It's obvious that the bill doesn't make difficult choices and doesn't set spending priorities. We don't believe it's a responsible way to budget."

And yet this administration just keeps on spending in many other ways...largest deficit in history...

Let's see - can't spend a few billion to try to manage our water resources (which are MORE critical than oil, actually) but it's OK to spend hundreds of billions to buy Iraq? Man, that's just stupid. At least our reps in Congress had sense enough to make this happen. (Assuming it isn't all going to pork projects, graft, and corruption of course)

In a message to lawmakers, the president noted that the House passed a $14 billion bill and the Senate a $15 billion bill, yet the conference committee compromised not by splitting the difference but by pumping it up to $23 billion, including 900 projects. "This bill lacks fiscal discipline," he said, adding, "American taxpayers should not be asked to support a pork-barrel system of federal authorization and funding where a project's merit is an afterthought." This is an earmark (pork) bill wrapped around some water and beach front expenditures to make it look good. Notice they don't talk about all of those earmarks. They will tout them just in their district.

If we get rid of the atheists it will be America again like it was before.

You really are a conspiracy addict aren't you. Who else besides "religious fanatics" and "corporate connivers" are to blame. Maybe Zionists, Jewish bankers, etc.
