McCain made a gaffe Tuesday when he said several times that Iran, which is mostly a Shiite country, was training the predominantly Sunni militant group al Qaeda. Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Connecticut, whispered in his ear. Moments later, McCain responded, "I'm sorry, the Iranians are training extremists, not al Qaeda. I am sorry."

"After eight years of the Bush Administration's incompetence in Iraq, McCain's comments don't give the American people a reason to believe that he can be trusted to offer a clear way forward," Karen Finney said. "Not only is Senator McCain wrong on Iraq once again, but he showed he either doesn't understand the challenges facing Iraq and the region or is willing to ignore the facts on the ground."

Not to mention the fact that, to be succinct, any idiot could see that the history of the region for the 20 years leading up to this war was that Iran and Iraq kept balance in check, and that our idea of "regime change" threw that balance WAY out of whack.

Even George H.W. Bush and Brent Scowcroft warned against invading Iraq for that reason.

      McCain, on the other hand...

Just like Ronald "the actor" Reagan. Once on camera he was asked a question and seemed completely ignorant about it. -No surprize there- His wife Nancy leaned over and and said "tell them we're doing everything we can."

He repeated it word for word. I was so disgusted I wanted to puke. These clowns are not fit to lead because they are led by the ring thru their nose.

    Good one ybdogsct.

The drum beat continues, I will give long odds that the attack planning is in the final stages. McDim seems to agree that it is required.

I actually just watched this on MSNBC's Countdown. It just like when he was asked about abortion and said his view was the same as someone elses. Then he turned to an aide and said 'I do have a position, don't I? Yes, I'm sure I do. What is it? Let me look it up and we'll get you a copy of that.'

And he's different from our current Cheney puppet.....HOW EXACTLY?

He's from the Ronald Reagan school of presidential politics, it would seem, the motto of which is surely: "You CAN fool all of the people all of the time".

Republicans really think this guy is a winner. Good luck with that guys. Let us know how it works out for you.

Bush knew as much about the differences between Shiites and Sunnis before this war started as McCain seems to know now. Our leaders should be thoroughly versed on the differences between the people within the most volatile region on the planet. Anything less is cause for disaster. We cannot afford to have to give McCain a training course: The Middle East for Dummies, months before his inauguration. Hence, he will not win the presidency.

Sadly david nwpa, it seems that narrow dogma and parrotted positions from the likes of Cheney (see ybdogsct's fine comment, earlier) will trump actual knowledge every time.

I like your concluding assertion, and truly hope it proves 100% accurate.

It is pretty sad to watch. This guy once had a bit of integrity -- something pretty rare among politicians. Look what his Repugnican allies have turned him into.

Quite so, ET. Last night I was watching an old flim clip of him cross-examining General Casey on the Iraq war.

McCain was lucid, hard-hitting and fully exposed the fatal divisions among those running that disastrous campaign.

But now it would seem that in his quest for the presidency, integrity has been jettisoned, like yesterday's newpaper.

                        ETproductions:

Quite true. But one doesn't become soiled unless one allows it.

McCain has shown that he wants this election more than his integrity.

What does that say of the corrupting influences of power?

We have a bunch of know nothings, who do nothing to fix the problems.

Because they are controlled by the wealthy elitists.

Whose true goal is to enslave all they are able to in oder to control the world.

Personally I don't know why they would want to control the wold. Since it seems they don't do a very good job of controlling themselves.

So there you have it. People wanting the power of control when they lack self control themselves.

Pretty sad we have become a nation of greedy kingdoms seeking to become the kingdom that all must serve.

The mindset exhibited by this comment highlights the sort of confusion displayed by McCain and his gaffes. Al Quaida and their terrorist brethren take their ideological lead from extremist Sunni Islam, which is antithetical to the Shi'ite brand practiced in Iran and by Iraq's predominant sect.

No Shia Muslims were involved in the 9-ll attack, or any other attack on American soil and probably the best defence against Al Quaida in Iraq would be for the country to become a Shi'ite Muslim theocracy.

Thats the version of 3am experience the country needs. Errr oopps well let me rethink that for a moment...Who is with us again sonny, what is their interest in the area why they act the way they do?

Seriously if this gaffe took place its a major one. Certainly after so many yrs from 9/11 such errors imply simplistic logic. You cannot understand your enemies until you know about them and how they think for centuries. Such mistake is 10 times more relevant than the attack Obama is currently facing out of comments some pastor that hasnt influenced at all his campaigns structure and ideas. This is not a typo or a slip or a tiny detail, this is relevant. I will not hold this against the election of the guy in general but i will hold it against any hypocritical ad that will try to attack the other candidate and claim international experience, superior critical ability and judgement. Boom! Drop such ads from now on or expect the gaffes to flag every single one of them to eternity.

I hope to God this guy isn't the next president, but there seems to be an honesty problem when it comes to voting here in America. He does push the bush agenda of total, never ending war and occupation, just what the military industrial complex likes to hear. So I won't be suprised to wake up and find this clown in the white house after nobody voted for him. It's what I've come to expect.

The problem is that with 40% of kids not able to find Iraq on the map (their parents probably not vastly better)simplistic ads and campaigns make the idiot people think that old war veteran guy is the most secure choice while in fact the opposite may be true at a time that a country needs profoundly inspiring and unifying leadership. News like these are rarely grasped by the masses because they themselves are unaware of the muslim religious sects that have existed and fought each other for over 14 centuries. Ignorance is the ultimate enemy of democracy and the eventual revenge of tyranny . Ignorance became a virtue under Bush.
