Rush pointed out that the Organization of the Islamic Conference represents the 57 Islamic states and that maybe Obama was thinking of this.

Listen to the ENTIRE clip, so elegantly edited in the transcript provided by the GOP website linked to above -- knowing full well that you're all too lazy to listen to the entire clip. He pauses after he says "I've been to fifty... seven states?", said as a QUESTION, as if he'd actually travelled to that many. At that point the audience laughs, and then continues with, "And they wouldn't let me visit Alaska and Hawaii," which garnered more laughs.
He was commenting on the amount of travel he had done. And maybe, juuuust maybe, he wanted to test the idiocy factor of the Far Right knuckleheads, like the majority of the posters here.
BTW: Here's an abbreviated list of how many people Obama is smarter than:
Bush, Rove, Cheney, Hillary, McCain, Rush, Hannity, the GOP, AlphaGnosis, DropKick...
And the list just keeps on growing.
Any of you naysayers willing to go back and really listen to the clip, and repost here that yes, it was said in jest, and the audience KNEW it?

In the primary to weaken Obama during the General Election. Kind of like the Dems voted for McCain in the Republican primaries.
First off, the Dems didn't vote for McCain in the primaries, DKL. The competition between Obama and Hillary was too intense for either pol's backers to waste a vote for the Old White Man's candidate.

Show me the party that CONSERVATIVELY spends our children's future, not spending us into record deficits.

Show me the party that CONSERVATIVELY infringes on states' rights.
Show me the party that CONSERVATIVELY uses good judgement where scandalous behavior might enter their own life.
And when you HONESTLY look at these values - conservative use of the military, spending and PERSONAL family values - I gotta admit, it ain't the Republican party.
Of course, I left off the environment, governmental secrecy, foreign policy, consensus-building and a host of areas where a "true conservative" (if there is such a thing) would expect a far better performance than from the Republican party over the past decade.

I think to question Obamas intelligent is not a good way to go for the GOPers, but who am I to stop self-destruction. The man went to Columbia/Harvard/Harvard law. teaches Constitutional Law at the UOI and they really think people are going to buy that he doesn't know it's 49 states. It's about as likely that Obama was referring to Islamic states as it is that he was referring to the states plus Washington, DC; American Samoa; Federated States of Micronesia; Guam; Midway Islands; Puerto Rico; and the U.S. Virgin Islands--in other words, all the states plus American territories and protectorates.
That's 57 all told, according to the U.S. government, which administers citizenship exams.

Come to think of it, it's MORE likely that he was thinking of all the American protectorates and territories, given that he's been a professor of Constitutional law.

While I share your beliefs about the comment not being about Islamic states, I think tanglang gives the likely explanation below. He said that he had been to all 57 states except for the two his staffers forbade (Alaska & Hawaii) and that he had one left to go. 50 minus 3 equals 47. An honest mistake to be sure.
Perhaps he included Afghanistan and Iraq as well that Bush is trying to annex.
But has he been to those countries this election cycle? If the answer is yes then it sheds a whole new light on this silly issue.
Yes, and besides he has not traveled to all the territories no matter how you cut it. His gaff can be attributed to a hard and BITTER campaign. We all slip up when exhausted.
