Politics – MSNBC's Dan Abrams questions Karl Rove's outrageous refusal to appear before Congress regarding serious allegations that he used the US Justice Department to take down a prominent Democratic politician. Did Rove instigate the prosecution of former Alabama Governor Don Siegleman? Will Congress force Rove to testify before Congress?
If Rove gets away with framing political adversaries by abuse of power and by manipulating the justice system, they will have the power to undermine any good leader who could become an advocate of the people. This is serious.
Deadly serious indeed. This calculated attack by the Bush administration on our constitution is nothing less than treason. By placing incompetent lackeys in key roles the entire administration has gotten away with crimes against the state, the international community, and indeed humanity.
Will congress show signs of life? It is their duty!
Karl Rove is clever--I'm convinced the only reason Bush is president is because of him. He managed to stay just out of reach when the Swift Boat campaign against John Kerry took off--although the key players associated with it were only one degree of separation from Rove.
He knows how to dance along the edge of the law, and because he has links to the most powerful (and could probably bring them down if they allow him to fall), he survives to do it again and again.
This is an administration where the Vice President claimed not to be part of the Executive Branch of government. They feed on a combination of corporatism and ignorance. At election time, Rove screams "abortion!" "gay rights!" and the religious right all hurry to the polls in a rush of doctrinal frenzy. After the election, it's business as usual.
This is one powerful man who is an absolute genius at manipulating public opinion and simultaneously rewarding the base.
Just like...Goebbels!
This criminal should have been jailed long ago.
Treason calls for the death penalty.
What kind of society admires and rewards a sneaky liar?
memestrker:
Yeah it's easy to be brave when you are a liar protected by political cronies.
One day though Rove will step out of this life and into another. He will not have his political connections nor will he have the ability to lie his way out.
He will wish that he had done the right things and dealt fairly with all people in his life. He will see the foolishness of what he has done. He will weep and wail and gnash his teeth at pain and misery he has caused and will endure.
That is a terrible thing. It humbles me to think that we don't have to do anything for Rove will have brought it all upon himself.
I wish I had your faith, cg. I see Rove as truly evil, and I don't think people like him so much as they are awed by him and afraid of him. Even if he doesn't bear false witness himself, he's always around when it happens.
Rove was evil, even as a child. I read his bio, this man is ruthless beyond words. I have no doubt that Bush will protect him as long as he can, simply out of fear of what will happen if he doesn't.
That said, Bush's time is almost up! Maybe our next admin can do something about this pariah and bring him to justice.
n2n:
Rove will be less than significant here he is going to end up.
There is a passage in the Bible that states -paraphrased- man will see satan one day and say are you the one nations' trembled over?
In other words all those who thought he was great and powerful will see that he is nothing at all when God takes away his freedom to act.
Therefore if satan who is a powerful demon will be looked upon as less than mighty. What will Rove and all those who are like him be looked upon as.
Fools who thought they were more than they are.
And what of the simple minded who adore him. What does it say of them.
Nah, Rove and those like him will never cause me fear only frustration at their stupidity and God less ways.
"Karl Rove is clever--I'm convinced the only reason Bush is president is because of him. He managed to stay just out of reach when the Swift Boat campaign against John Kerry took off--although the key players associated with it were only one degree of separation from Rove."
Absolutely correct! That has been a tactic well used by this administration, even Bush him self ,
Example.
As evidence he cited Mr. Bush's statement in his January 2003 State of the Union address that "the British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa,"
It was not our intelligence, it was the British who supplied
that piece of garbage. Oh but it gets better, then you look
at the Downing Street memo.
It is serious indeed that things have gone on this long. This president should be impeached. His Vice president should be impeached. Feith, Rove, Rumsfield and Rice should all be FIRED. Mukassey should never have been confirmed. Goon=zales should be brought up on charges as well. This gang of criminals has done more to undermine our Constitution than any other gang of thugs in history.
We are a long way from the people who pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor to bring this country into being. The yahoos currently in power have no comprehension of what the hell SACRED HONOR is.

"If Rove refuses to testify voluntarily and ignores the subpoenas that will certainly be issued, he should be held in Inherent Contempt of the House of Representatives.
No American is above the law. None of us should be able to ignore Congress without consequence. If Mr. Rove ignores a subpoena from the Judiciary Committee, then the House of Representatives should pass an Inherent Contempt citation and exercise our right to send the House Sergeant-of-Arms to gather Mr. Rove and bring him before Congress to testify."
"Enough is enough. We have a Constitutional obligation to provide accountability to a White House that is trying usurp the constitutional powers of Congress."
Bravo To Robert Wexler. We must demand that Congress stand up to hoodlums and renegades like Rove, Cheney, Meyers, Roberto Gonsalez, and Mukasey. Without a Congress, there is no government of or by the people. And right now we do not have a Congress.
Ah yes, more liberal rantings. The guy was convicted on SEVEN counts of corruption. All you can do is come up with some BS hear-say excuse that "Karl Rove said he was going to talk to his girls."
Karl Rove had zero executive power. He was the chief of staff, not the President. What a bunch of garbage! LMAO
Eight US attorneys get fired - but not the Fitzgerald. Somehow, it's a big conspiracy. Clinton fired all of them -- including several investigating his own corruption, and somehow, no big deal.
Liberals might want to pull those panties out of their hind ends. They are bunched up way too tight and cutting off the oxygen to their brains. No wonder Congress continually does nothing except garner worse approval ratings than the president.
libsRfunny---Well, Rove is intelligent, evil, and cunning. Your president is an idiot. That was a disastrous combination for America.
I see that my first comment got a "neg" from our resident spiteful, paid Republican shill, fluff chick who will never admit that the prez that she luvs is a catastrophe. :-)
Fluff Chick!
how apropos!
You are my new heero.
Goppy---"You are my new heero"
I'm positively thrilled, Goopy! :-)
Accompanied with one WStilson - a mystery figure with no previous propeller history.
Ah, well...
Rove IS the power behind Bush, along with Cheney and Rice and Rumsfeld when he was there (probably is still in the cabal).
Bush cannot even utter a coherent sentence on his own. He failed every time he tried to run any private company - he couldn't even keep an OIL company going!
So, Bush isn't running anything - the people behind him are. It is obvious to anyone with any common sense.
The attorney firings are not a 'conspiracy' - the firings were punishment because they did not tow the 'line' and prosecute only Democrats even if there was NO basis or evidence for any such prosecutions. And, they had the nerve to indict and prosecute people who were Republicans, even when they DID have evidence to support the indictments.
At the time of their firings there were 20 Congresspeople under investigation. 17 republicons and 3 Democrats. That's why they got fired.
Now the CREW List has 18 Repugs out of 22 with the only senators being repugs still. Isn't it great that this past year the top 6 earmark spenders were still Repugs as further evidence of just pure Party corruptness!
Bushies couldn't even get their story straight before firing those 8 prosecutors... as Gonzo said they were released "for cause" which turned out to be a definite lie...
Libs only gets her revisionist history from people like Rove, any of Dumya's failed past press secretaries, Rush, Ann (flaming) Coulter, or Faux Fox Facts.
I wonder if bubba2 is old enough to remember the Janet Reno wing of the Clinton Cabinet whose agenda was driven by Mr. Clinton. She even file to have tax-exempt status removed from a church whose pastor had the audacity to criticize the character of a politician running for president. Or can you remember The White House staff refusing to allow law enforcement agencies to investigate the death of a Clinton Staff member for several days while the scene of the death was cleaned and rearranged.
"She even file to have tax-exempt status removed from a church whose pastor had the audacity to criticize the character of a politician running for president. "
It's illegal for a tax-exempt Church to promote one candidate/politician over another. They can talk about morals, Biblical law and what to look for in a President (or other candidate), but once they move on to specifics about one person or the other in an election they're breaking the law and should lose their tax-exempt status.
Considering the number of liberal Churches this administration has gone after for the same crime (while ignoring every single conservative evangelical church that violated the same law), perhaps you shouldn't bring it up.
SLAMMA JAMMA!!
MAN ALIVE!!!
You WASTED that Howdy fella!
(ooos, sorry ... that was just so LETHAL!)
libs,
Guess what. That Rezko trial you have been so eagerly awaiting in order to attack Obama over...turns out Rezko was deep in bed with the Bush admin and in sworn testimony it came out that Rove targeted Fitzgerald for firing over his investigation of Republicans.
Obstruction of Justice, by Rove or anyone else, is still a felony crime.
Just because you think laws don`t apply to Republicans does not mean that Thinking America agrees.
I feel for you., you are running scared...but remember, the Truth Will set You Free.
I liek seein compassion.
But in all honesty, I dont think theres nuthin that will set libsR free. Hes a very, very angry .... ENRAGED .... individual.
Has been ever since I knowed him.
...only an insane assylum would suffice for her delusions! And make sure she can't get a picture ID!

"You shall mold the Truth, and the truth shall not be told."

LOL!
Libs, if half the stuff you fabricate were true, 7 years of Repig instigated investigation and the Newt led Congress would have made something other than an illicit affair stick - you absolute liar and fabricator!
It must really get your goat that in spite of Repug efforts to tear Bill down, he left office with a 65% approval rating, not bad considering the deluded, Un-American fools like you out there!
This is despicable, who do they think they are? They have usurp 100rds of years of tradition and laws that worked to make us the country we are now. I hope they get him!
This is long, so you'll probably not read it. But for those interested:
In 2005, Don Siegelman was charged with 32 counts of bribery just as he was beginning his bid for another term as governor. In 2006 he was found not guilty of 25 of those charges and guilty of seven.
He was led from the courtroom after sentencing IN SHACKLES. Now we're not talking about someone who committed murder or who had a history of violence. But the man was put in shackles! Normally in a case like this, the person stays free on bond pending appeal. But not Siegelman. The governor was whisked immediately out of the courtroom in shackles, and sent to several out of state jails.
Meanwhile, allegations were surfacing that the Dept. of Justice and Karl Rove had operated behind the scenes of this whole thing. So a few journalists began investigating, and came up with some evidence they found compelling. They tried to get it out to the public, but the MSM wouldn't report on it. (continued)
I see the second part didn't show up. Oh well.
Federal prosecution

"Alabama's U.S. Attorneys began a criminal investigation of Governor Siegelman in 1999 based on accusations of corruption while in office. In 2004, Siegelman was indicted, and in 2006 was convicted on corruption charges."
So how did Rove get the Alabama's U.S. Attorneys in 1999 to begin an investigation of Siegelman?
Rove had nothing to do with the Federal government in 1999.
"In short, Siegelman as lieutenant governor from 1995 to 1999 and governor from 1999 to 2003 was accused of trading government favors for campaign donations."
So the timeline is like this.
From 1995 to 1999 Siegelman was suspected of being corrupt. In 1999 the US attorney started an investigation.
The investigations lead to indictments and finally conviction in 2006.
Exactly how did Rove cause this guy to be corrupt from 1995 to 1999?
If he's a crook he's a crook don't matter what anyone else says.
Couldn't beat him in an election?
The same could be said of Duke Cunningham. Duke Cunningham is in prison now because he was a crook just like this clown Siegelman.
injest, nice try for you can try to show some consistency but you only say such when you know you have a dem in the gun sights. How about the Cuban immigrant living freely in Miami that blew up an airliner with 76 innocent passengers on it - freedom fighter not terrorist to you right wingers! How about all those Repug pardons from Watergate to Iran Contra to Plamegate?
injest, come to alabama and listen to radio for all the religious stations (they all carry the repug political lies) and the Repug only commercials in this Repug dominated state and you will shut up!
Right now all I see for political commercials on TV are more repugs saying the same BS that has convinced 82% of Americans the country is headed the wrong way!
Yes, repugs running for the jobs that career repugs are quiting, disgusted by the vile tactics they used in their 109th "Do Nothing" Congress.
Injest, where you are correct in your time line, that does not negate the fact Rove obviously went after Siegelman. Even if Siegelman is truly a convicted political felon, Rove may have tampered with the law himself. Two wrongs do not make a right. Rove should certainly be made to testify and tell what he knows, and if he is found to have broken the law, he should serve time also.
"Rove had nothing to do with the Federal government in 1999."
if you think Rove didn't have his dirty little fingers involved in govt in 1999 just cause he was "working" in the private sector for enron at the time, you're much more naive than I first suspected.
These are the actions of criminals, they should be investigated and every judge they appoint should be removed because it's clear to me that they set up the courts so that they can continue their criminal activities long after they are out of the white house!
This helps me sleep at night.
Whatever rules, end-runs, or whatever the Bushies have actively created to wipe their arses with the Constitution, the next president can do one of two things:
1) declare all those actions, hirings, firings, rules, etc unconstitutional and void - as if they never happened
and/or
2) pick and choose which ones to co-opt in the pursuit of justice AGAINST the Bushies.
