Not really. He'll have zero impact. Libertarians never do. Ralph Nader will have a greater impact.

I think the way it works Josey - is that Libertarians take the "Hate Goverment" vote from Republicans.
Everbody knows that the Republicans have a strong "Hate Goverment" contingent.
After all, Christian Conservatives, (a major component to GWs rise to power), believe in a nation that Legislates CULTURAL behavior ... to the exclusion of all else.
Aint you evea wondered why we dont get angry at the way GW has dismantled all effectiveness of goverment ... AT EVERY LEVEL?

I ken help ya ADAGUY.
Bob Barr is a Modern Style Republican. The CULTURE Warrior type who has typically run on a platform that Liburals are Morally Deficient ... when compared to 'Stand Up Republicans'.
Thats why he was VERY VOCAL and VERY INDIGNANT at some of Bill Clinton's BJ.
Course ... ahem ... as a Modern Style Republican ... he is the Poster Boy for Right Wing Hypocrisy.
See, he was an adulterer in his FIRST marriage.
Then, he was an adulterer in his SECOND marriage.
Then, he arranged for his Second Wife to get an ABORTION so he could be with his THIRD wife!
The Abortion thing is kinda problematic considerin that he often (and loudly) proclaimed himself (in particular) and Republicans (in general) as bein "PROTECTORS of the UNBORN".
See? Just your standard 'Culture Warrior' who is also your standard "Hypocrite". Nothin new in this Modern Age of Republicanism - and now - Libertarianism!

And people think Ron Paul is strange. Barr is a hardline social conservative and corporatist, although I do agree with him on a few key issues more than the others running (the war in Iraq and right to keep and bear arms, for example). He is far more right-wing than McCain and not much of a civil libertarian at all, IMO. I listened to the Libertarian Party Q&A, and he endlessly used long-winded politic-speak digressions--he's definitely C-SPAN material.
I think he won because he's the only one on the slate with a strong insider track record and a name for himself, albeit as a hardline social conservative for the Republicans. If you're not familiar with him, his record is featured with dated material on the biased site (but still useful):
http://www.ontheissues.org/GA/Bob_Barr.htm
I'm disappointed they didn't pick a true civil libertarian.

Josey said: " ... this guy is no libertarian."
So? Whats yer point?
Goerge W. Bush is no Republican ... but we Christian Conservatives all voted for him anyway.
You dont seem to understand that theres a vast swath of voters who vote based on what label they are carryin.

more fantasy analysis.
he'll only be taking votes away from McCain: repubs who would rather die than vote dem, who don't think McCain is a good choice but wold rather see him in the white house than obama (which there are a lot of). those are the votes he'll get.
and barr definitely won't get any dems votes, especially since he's one of the guy's who lead the bill clinton witch hunt.

This is another sign of the discontent that we have with the mainstream parties. I think it is a good thing. We need to let our parties know that we are not happy with the way they have been doing things.

I have voted Libertarian in every presidential election from 1980 until the 2000 election, when I voted for Gore as the best way of stopping an abject criminal from assuming the mantle of power.
I do agree with Barr on a number of issues but I think he'd be a wasted vote in this election. This election will be more about stopping the continuing backslide introduced by the Dumbya Dictatorship that would be exacerbated by a McCain victory. McCain's as wrong for the country now as Dumbya was in 2000. At least Obama is a Constitutional scholar who was endorsed by the leading scholar on the Constitution in the United States today, Lawrence Tribe.
I was never a libertarian purist. Ideological purity is stupid. What works for me is eclecticism that does not offend the Constitution. America needs to move forward in the 21st Century, not backslide into a Byzantine abyss with elite transnational corporations - McCain's supporters - acting as taxpayer financed feudal warlords.

So Jose, did you enjoy Gonzo the Junta Monkey while he lasted? I'm sure you were proud as he shredded the Constitution, promoted torture, extraordinary rendition and the wiretapping of ordinary Americans. Typical of all wingnuts you make statements without offering a shred of fact to support them. That's because you are a rightwing ideological wingnut sucking at the tit of Faux News. Your bankrupt ideology still clings to the "Marxist" ruse in a vain effort to breathe life into a clinically brain dead movement that has succeeded in only two ways: sending our troops to their deaths for corporate greed and bleeding the wealth of our nation.

I personally think Libertarianism is for people who haven't traveled the world. There are plenty of libertarian societies, try India for example. No regulations, localized control over roads and other institutions (which is why some counties are paved, others not) no public education, and it's a democracy. They're a highly pluralistic society (many religion and sects) and they discriminate between them greatly, only supporting their group and not careing about the other groups. they collect few taxes (especially with corruption reducing tax payment), they let business run wild without regulation.

I don't think American Libertarianism is about total lack of regulation, I think right now we (as a country) want to undo Bush's desecration of the constitution and Geneva Convention for his power fetish. It's more about integrating personal freedom into the government, like saying that there shouldn't be a national ban against gay marriage.
But I definitely wouldn't be in favor of a libertarian government like the one you describe.

It is my experience, in my discussion with Libertarians ... in their heart of hearts ... look to the Spiritual Touchstone of the movement ... yes ... Im speakin of the dear 'Ayn Rand'.
She outlined the essential Libertarian in her writins.
The essence is: 'It is IMMORAL to initiate force on anyone else. The source of The State's Power is in their ability to 'coerce'.
Therefore - Goverment is Immoral.

eh heh heh - thats pretty ding dang funny!
But heres what Bob Barr says he supports in an interview with teh Phillidelphia Inquisitor:
Barr: "I want to move the agenda of smaller government and increased individual liberty forward; help the Libertarian party to become a major, consistent player on the national political scene; raise the level of debate; bring the issues of smaller government back to the table, and cut government spending - that's at the root of all the issues facing the American people. I want to end the artificial control of the economy and end burdensome taxation; take a hard look at cutting cabinet positions; reduce the cost of the occupation of Iraq by beginning the process of removing the security blanket from the Iraqi regime . . . return respect for habeas corpus; reinstate the rule of law; stop the warrantless surveillance of American citizens; and remedy the abuses of the Patriot Act. . . ."
