A sad day for the Libertarian Party, I'd say. But a damn glad one for the Democrats.

Not really. He'll have zero impact. Libertarians never do. Ralph Nader will have a greater impact.

"A sad day for the Libertarian Party, I'd say. But a damn glad one for the Democrats."

How does having someone who will take anti-war Republican votes from Obama help the Democrats?

It will be interesting to see how he polls. Would not be surprised if he received somewhere between 5 and 10% initially.

He'll probably siphon off some McCain votes since he's so rabidly right on so many social issues. He'll help the dems, for sure.

        I ken help ya ADAGUY.

Bob Barr is a Modern Style Republican. The CULTURE Warrior type who has typically run on a platform that Liburals are Morally Deficient ... when compared to 'Stand Up Republicans'.

Thats why he was VERY VOCAL and VERY INDIGNANT at some of Bill Clinton's BJ.

Course ... ahem ... as a Modern Style Republican ... he is the Poster Boy for Right Wing Hypocrisy.

See, he was an adulterer in his FIRST marriage.

Then, he was an adulterer in his SECOND marriage.

Then, he arranged for his Second Wife to get an ABORTION so he could be with his THIRD wife!

The Abortion thing is kinda problematic considerin that he often (and loudly) proclaimed himself (in particular) and Republicans (in general) as bein "PROTECTORS of the UNBORN".

See? Just your standard 'Culture Warrior' who is also your standard "Hypocrite". Nothin new in this Modern Age of Republicanism - and now - Libertarianism!

Don't know about Nader, but Barr won't do as well as Ron Paul did 20 years ago. He won't take much from McCain because his support will come from anti-war Republicans who won't vote for McCain anyway and would sit it out or vote for Obama.

And people think Ron Paul is strange. Barr is a hardline social conservative and corporatist, although I do agree with him on a few key issues more than the others running (the war in Iraq and right to keep and bear arms, for example). He is far more right-wing than McCain and not much of a civil libertarian at all, IMO. I listened to the Libertarian Party Q&A, and he endlessly used long-winded politic-speak digressions--he's definitely C-SPAN material.

I think he won because he's the only one on the slate with a strong insider track record and a name for himself, albeit as a hardline social conservative for the Republicans. If you're not familiar with him, his record is featured with dated material on the biased site (but still useful):

          http://www.ontheissues.org/GA/Bob_Barr.htm

I'm disappointed they didn't pick a true civil libertarian.

Not likely. His support will come almost entirely from anti-war Republicans who wouldn't vote for McCain anyway. If anything, he might very slightly hurt Obama, but I doubt he draws even 500,000 votes total nationwide, because this guy is no libertarian.

I could live with that. A lot longer than any of us would probably live with what we've got now.

haha No income taxes could be collected because the Senate would refuse to fund the IRS and the Judiciary would be filled by recess appointments.

This is another sign of the discontent that we have with the mainstream parties. I think it is a good thing. We need to let our parties know that we are not happy with the way they have been doing things.

The Libertarian Party has a rare talent for choosing unattractive individuals as its standard bearers. This simply continues a tradition that goes back many years.

I hope you're not talking about looks when you say unattractive, because that's just ignorant.

Mike Gravel left the democratic ticket and AOL said he dropped out of the election, but I feel his ideas were the best to go on, you know, even though he's 74.

I have voted Libertarian in every presidential election from 1980 until the 2000 election, when I voted for Gore as the best way of stopping an abject criminal from assuming the mantle of power.

I do agree with Barr on a number of issues but I think he'd be a wasted vote in this election. This election will be more about stopping the continuing backslide introduced by the Dumbya Dictatorship that would be exacerbated by a McCain victory. McCain's as wrong for the country now as Dumbya was in 2000. At least Obama is a Constitutional scholar who was endorsed by the leading scholar on the Constitution in the United States today, Lawrence Tribe.

I was never a libertarian purist. Ideological purity is stupid. What works for me is eclecticism that does not offend the Constitution. America needs to move forward in the 21st Century, not backslide into a Byzantine abyss with elite transnational corporations - McCain's supporters - acting as taxpayer financed feudal warlords.

Everyone is idologically pure as to his/her own ideology.

Oh, and Obama is a Marxist. Don't say you were not warned if the people foolishly elect this fraud from Chi Town

I personally think Libertarianism is for people who haven't traveled the world. There are plenty of libertarian societies, try India for example. No regulations, localized control over roads and other institutions (which is why some counties are paved, others not) no public education, and it's a democracy. They're a highly pluralistic society (many religion and sects) and they discriminate between them greatly, only supporting their group and not careing about the other groups. they collect few taxes (especially with corruption reducing tax payment), they let business run wild without regulation.

I don't think American Libertarianism is about total lack of regulation, I think right now we (as a country) want to undo Bush's desecration of the constitution and Geneva Convention for his power fetish. It's more about integrating personal freedom into the government, like saying that there shouldn't be a national ban against gay marriage.

But I definitely wouldn't be in favor of a libertarian government like the one you describe.

I like Thom Hartmann's description: "Libertarians are Republicans who want to smoke dope and get laid."
