The current benefit is 26 weeks. Historically, the benefit started at 13 weeks, and was raised once already. This is legislation that will be borne on the backs of the working members of the population, through taxes. Since it's unfunded it will mean higher taxes for the working, and higher costs to employers. This is not what we need to help a slow growth economy.
Our current jobless rate of 5.5% is historically low, and while individual states are higher (that's how averages work) others are lower. This seems like an unfortunate piece of political fluff in an election year, not a serious piece of governance.
