          Not really, he knows that town hall debates are what McC is strongest at so why fight on your opponent choice of battle grounds.

          He did suggest 5 debates in return, 1 a town hall 3 normal put you to sleep type and 1 one a specific topic, will McC accept, probably not but he may have a counter proposal till both get what each other wants, kind of like bartering in my eyes.

          And if McC does not accept Obama,s idea will that make him a coward.Ã;(question mark)

              I think we need to have alot of debates of multiple styles, town-halls, single topics and even the traditional moderated style. Perhaps a town-hall over a single topic moderated,and the topic selected, by those who attend the event? Very informal, perhaps?

                the debate thing is interesting. Obama thinks debates are good ideas. But you'll notice that McCain is doing the same thing Clinton did. trying to get A WHOLE mess of debates. The reason he is doing it is what i guess the same reason hillary was doing it is. Obama's number sky rocket when he can campaign on the ground. All of the internal numbers show this. That if he has an afternoon in a town, that town will vote Obama at twice the rate they would have the day before.

                The more debates you have, the more you get to define his campaing schedule and the more you take him off the ground.

                and McCain wants 'townhall' meetings because he it is easier to dodge a wuestion that a normal citizen asks than it is to dodge a question that a moderator asks.

                He's the one being cowardly. What do you need 10 townhall meetings for? in four and half months? over 2 a month? and wy does HE need to decide the way everythign is run? he's the one who is clearly scared of Obama.

                        not very formal speech is not something that will get the main stream America all wired up but hill billies will fall on their back as if they have discovered a gold mine.

                          First of all bigot, I am not a hillbilly. Second of all I have heard a great deal more from that same speech than that 40 second clip. Do you really think it is necessary to listen to five minutes of him whining just to build up to his 40 seconds of studdering? Perhaps if you were more informed about your candidate you would have seen the rest of the speech too.

                    I'll admit I'm disappointed that the Obama campaign did not go along with the 10 town hall meetings (I think 10 was overkill; 3-5 would have been fine), but I'm certain that if only one debate/talk is scheduled this summer, one will be all we need to see Obama standing head and shoulders above his opponent.

                    And the Obama campaign did what any political party should do...they made a counter-offer. Politics, is after all, part bartering and compromise. And the offer by the Obama campaign does have a variety of formats, which is also important. Each candidate has his own strengths/weaknesses, so limiting all meetings to just one kind would have only highlighted one candidate's strengths.

                    But I do hope they come to some agreement before too long...the American people need to see the differences between the candidates, and they need to see them soon!

                    That is the forum where he will make most of his mistakes. Without a teleprompter he loses his charisma and erudite speaking. He makes mistakes and stumbles around answering questions. McCain has a lot of experience in this type of environment. He for many years has answered questions from press anytime they were near him trying to trip him up and answered usually without any gaffes.

                  Yes I am, only like in your nation my wants and desires are of little consequence, besides, as stated before, our nation of 32 Mill. does not bring to light the world events that yours do.

                  Till clint got into power we were peace keepers, a joke to you guys, but hell our troops went into hot spots without being armed to stand between two warring factions, as I said a joke to you, but we were proud of it as we made a positive influence, small as it may be.

                  9-11 comes and US air space is shut down, where did most of the inbound traffic go, yeah Canada, only we still get bad mouthed.

                  Did we honour and stand by our ally in Afgan, are we losing troops there, yes, but to most we are still a joke, there are a few that acknowledge that we are again a positive force but most rather just put us down for not being Yanks.

                  When Katrina hit, we were the first, that is right even before your own Gov. to send help, but as one poster put it, out 3 row boats don,t compare to the USN.

          This is is a rather bold claim for something "which stirred no excitement last week." Sounds to me much more like a visit to the deli down the street than a night out on the town and incomparably not as significant as the enfranchisement of women!!

          What has been missing in the discussion so far is that a) Obama has ZERO obligation to go along with any one specific idea and b) Its a winner for McCain because he's struggling for funds and this way he gets a lot of exposure cheap and c) MOST significantly McCain has had moths to campaign as the chosen candidate any darn way that he wants and anywhere that he wants whereas Obama has been obliged to continue struggling to achieve his candidacy and NOW needs to get his own message out there far and wide.

              to an extent, I agree that there are many that will find fault with anything the "other guy" does. Just as to many, Obama can do nothing right, there are many others who feel the same way about McCain.

              If "debates" were conducted along the lines of the old-style debates where the candidates were actually allowed to interact with each other and ask each other for clarification, I would agree that the three debates that are already scheduled would be fine.

              However, not only are they not allowed to address each other or ask the other to clarify their position, they are told specifically what the debate is going to be. If you really listen to the responses from the candidates, as a rule, they don't really answer the questions they are asked, they respond with their memorized response to a question that is similar. The other candidate is not allowed to call them on it and the moderator never does.

              Maybe town hall style would be more honest. Maybe not.

              SO, As I said 'they' Obama, McCain, the news media et al,,, owe us the ability to hear what these two really think about any topic without a pre planned layout and fluff rehearsed answers.

    It should be pointed out that Senator Obama never agreed to McCain's initial proposal of 10 'Town Hall' meetings in 10 weeks. What Obama said was that he liked the idea/concept of 'Town Halls' and was confident that something could be worked out between the two campaigns. 10 was always an unrealistic figure to expect. In the end after all negotiations have been completed look for two or three Town Halls this summer and the three standard debates this fall...possibly resulting in a 100% increase in the number of face-offs in compared to previous years.

    He agreed conditionally and that was all he committed to at the time. There was no dramatic turn around in his position. IMHO, 10 town hall meetings are overkill. I'll leave it to the republicons posting here to supply the only drama this refusal to agree on conditions contains.

        Probably not in recent history. I still wanna see ten. I have little use for either candidate, Obama I have more use for then McCain, and I'll admit... sometimes I'll attack either for little reason. I tend to believe that campaigns have run a muck and need to be less about money and more about issues. To much is about money in the damned things. I thought this idea by McCain was a damned good one, by and large. Its one of the few things I give him credit for. If not ten then I want six, three in the manner of Obama's choosing and three in the manner of McCain's.

    But remember any town hall meeting so far for McC has been due to Rep. race, will he do well when there will obviously have Dems asking him questions, or will he lose it.
