John Yoo, Totalitarian »
Posted By populist 3 months, 3 weeks ago in NewsYoo believes that the Constitution and liberty rank below "the nation's security." "The advancing age of several justices" means that President McCain can give us more judges like Roberts and Alito who will make certain that mere civil liberties don't get in the way of arbitrary executive power justified by national security.

John McCain and John Yoo would give us more of the same. But the "nation's security" rallying cry will snare many good voters who simply don't understand habeas corpus enough to sift through the Republican spin. I fear that we will continue to get in deeper.

You're too kind. Anyone who doesn't take the time to understand what this country stands for and how, is hardly a "good voter" in my book. But I'll bet they wouldn't miss one episode of American Idol.

What about our constitutional right to keep and bear arms for self-protection? McCain has recognized the failure of various laws that infringe on our second amendment rights and has come around on this to some extent. If Obama also shifts to support self-defense, he'll be unbeatable.

Try reading the second ammendment before you say what it means. It has nothing to do with self protection. It is there to provide for a well regulated milita when needed by the government to deal with invasion.
If you believe it is about self protection you simly listen to what the NRA tells you and don't even attempt to read the constitution to see what it really says.

More of the same we don't need. I agree that McCain would give us a Bush third term basically, but Obama needs to stop making screwups or we will end up with McCain. The right wing smear machine will capitalize on ever mistake he makes no matter how small. They have had years of practice and are good at it, they could make George Washing look like a flamming fag, left wing kook. Propaganda is their forte.
The American people are pretty easy to con, just look at the last two elections.

I'm not sure that Obama screws up all that much. The right takes non-stories and spins them into the propaganda that you mention. It's abominable, and that's why I mentioned that I fear that we're headed in deeper. Some powerful people without consciences have hijacked our nation.

That is true. There is something extremely amiss in this country. People don't even act the same or seem to care. It's like some bad programming, that Republican game playing.
I'm going to vote for Obama and straigth Democratic. I'd like to kick out any Republican that is running for a seat.
We need these immorral, fear mongering, religious pandering right wing a-holes out!

Perhaps he could pre tape everything he says, run it by a focus group and see how it does. Or maybe Michelle could quit her job, stay home and send cookie recipes to Woman's Day magazine.
For three decades the right wing has been as you say 'practicing'. And as you say they are good at it. They own the air waves in radio. They own the Corporatists who own the MSM. They're despicable liars and propagandists. But if Americans can't see that after all that's happened, & vote for another CON, it won't be because Obama made 'mistakes.' It will be because Americans are dumb beyond belief, and will get what they deserve.

Bingo. "The nation's security is our Constitution." Without it, what would there be to fight for?

OK, I had to look. Wish there had been someone around to bet with, cause I'd have won. Yoo is another nefarious member of the Federalist Society, that group of right wing hacks that is trying to take over our judiciary, including our SC. I've said it before and will say it again. Americans had BETTER study up on that little group.

I'm looking forward to an endless supply of these foreign terrorists on TV starting in 2009, with the taxpayers paying millions in fees for both sides and the judges eventually putting them back in circulation due to "lack of evidence".

If you think about it he wrote legal opinions for the White House.
If you were the Bush administration and you wanted to break the laws in the Constition who would you hire? (think Alberto Gonzalez).
Likely you would hire someone from a country that does not respect individual liberties. This means someone who believes our laws are too lax. Someone who grew up with a different set of values. Someone who is used to seeing peoples' rights assualted.

John Yoo is a traitor to the Constitution and Americans.
That is not just an opinion, but a widely held belief by legal scholars and people alike. Born out of the Bush administration and it's endless thirst for power, Yoo quickly learned to find "new" and "interesting" ways to interpret and bastardize our laws. He was quickly followed by David Addington, considered to be Cheney's counseliere.
A child like legal ploy they both use is to ask "Does a particular interpretion of the Constition limit or weaken the President?"
A standing joke with Republicans is that Addington carries a copy of the Constitution in his pocket- evidently to see which pages to rip out.
"Several legal commentators have argued that Yoo could potentially be indicted for crimes against the laws and customs of war, the crime of torture, and/or crimes against humanity.[29]"

The bush administration picked Yoo because of who he was. They didn't make him that way. There are several THOUSAND jurists and attorneys who think just like Yoo. And they all belong to the same group. The Federalist Society.

Folks like John Yoo would not have had the power or more importantly the opportunity to author such "outlandish" and "traitorous" legal opinions regarding Constitutional protections and illegal use of torture without Bush.
Bush was the enabler for Yoo, and John Yoo wrote opinions that helped Bush break the laws.
He was born in Korea - not a haven for civil liberties, but he was given opportunity by Dumya.
"Yoo emigrated with his parents from South Korea to the United States. He grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and graduated with a B.A in American history from Harvard University in 1989 and Yale Law School in 1992."

Of course not Locky12.
The Senate had a hearing in December 2007 ( Telecast live by C-Span )about whether detainees in Gitmo were actually "Enemy Combatants". I watched this live C-Span telecast and, a Professor Mark Denbeaux presented a paper to the Senate with the data of 517 detainee records at Gitmo at the time. The data was the United States own data. As I recall 93% of the "Worst of Worst" as presented by Bush and Cheney, were actually at Gitmo because they were sold to the U S by Afghani and Pakaistani clans for the bounty.
The actual report is there to find and read. Like I said I watched it then got a copy of the report so I could really pore over it.
Bottom line - very few detainees are "Enemy Combatants" and even fewer have had a chance to challenge the label.
I think I remember that there were 14 detainees who could be actual proven by the evidence to have been captured "While fighting against American Troops"

"No American security was at stake in Afghanistan"
Isn't this were al-qaeda planned their attacks on WTC. Isn't this the origin of al-qaeda? Wow, what some people will say to beg for a few bucks.
Funny how you fools don't realize that populists biggest cry is for "Donate". He accepts VISA, MASTERCARD, American Express and Discover. Wow, I'm impressed. Not to many place except AM-EX and Discover. Must be a nice profit margin to cover those fees. And now he expanded into peddling books, Nice. Way to go Populists, exploit all the things you supposedly hate about America. Nothings to slimy to make a buck off of.

Well I believe the forerunner of Al-Queda ( The word means our base ) was actually formed by U S Special Forces to fight against the Russians in Afghanistan.
And one of the hero's of the Mujjhidean ( may be misspelled ) was one Osama Bin Laden. One of the Hero's of America at the time.
He is a Saudi.
Osama Bin Laden warned the United States that if they placed a Military Base on Saudi soil, he would consider it an act of war and would therefore declare war on the United States.
We did, then he did.
Was it un-intended consequences? Only the Neo-Cons know. But I'll bet they were hoping he would keep his word. They really needed something to start a war to grab the Oil in the Middle East.
You know, something akin to the Gulf of Tonkin incident that led to the Viet-Nam war. A totally manufactured incident. I believe that something like 59,000 American Soldiers lost their lives in that deception.

Yoo who indeed. He is the legal advisor who the Bush bunch thrust upon us a "Scholar" concerning Constitutional Law.
I have no doubt that he knows what is constitutional and what is not.
I also have no doubt that he has the ability to state whatever he wants as a support of the Neo-Con Agenda.
Knowing what is right does not guarantee that the one who knows right, will speak right.
We call these people liars where I come from. And I go further and brand Yoo as a traitor to the American Constitution. And as such he should be brought to trial and suffer the fate of those who cause death and destruction of innocents simply to help further the aims of the War mongering crowd.

further erosion of our right by the fascist elite and corporate fascists. 9/11 was an inside job and the Whitehouse was at least complicit in the whole affair!!
