"On June 20, 1996, Senator John McCain allegedly assaulted a family member of a Vietnam War prisoner of war (POW) who was missing in action (MIA), as a group of about 15 family members of POW/MIAs watched in astonishment. Within about one month, five ethics complaints had been filed with the Senate Ethics Committee by five eyewitnesses. But the Senate Ethics Committee refused to investigate the matter."
"five ethics complaints had been filed with the Senate Ethics Committee"
Jovial
"This is quite simply astounding. I can't imagine any reason to do something like this. This allegation is damning. If it is true then anyone that votes for this guy is a worm."
WOW!, amazing!
So tell me why did the DNC BEG McCain to switch over to the dems and run on the Dem ticket for president in 2004?

the number of reliable stories about mccain's anger is very large. if he wants to be angry, that's his business.
but voting for him for president, knowing about his problem, concerns everyone.

In all fairness to McCain what he went thru and lived thru is horrific beyond imagination.
That said. He has no right to treat the families of others who have suffered as much or worse than he did that way.
His anger is understandable. I have a temper just from being in that stinkin war and I was never a prisoner like him.
Still we need a cooler head in the Whitehouse than he has.

The consensus from both sides of the aisle is that he is stricken with temper tantrums.
But if this story came out about Obama, it would be all over the news media 24 and 7.
The media is really going easy on this dipsy doodle.

Double post. I wish I had something else to add to fill in this obnoxious malfunction. Sorry...

This has been addressed before, & as usual the press was silent about it. It just makes no sense, and there's nothing to conclude but that people are trying to hide something. Why? This kind of secrecy is just maddening. Even John Kerry's name pops up in the suppression of information. I completely understand the frustration of families, but I also understand that the frustration could conceivably lead them to postulate the worst about McCain. So unless there is hard evidence, I can't go there. But McCain needs to explain his actions.

McCain's volatility is well documented.
Generally, people with "anger management" problems make iffy leaders, if for no other reason than it becomes that much harder for them to work with others and vice versa.
There's also the matter of repairing inevitable ruptures, large or small, one instigates with people whom one has "gone off" on.
What we need now is a president who is POLITIC, a statesman.
McCain's temper is also a serious problem for his handlers--all he and they would need is an irrational outburst (or even an obvious attempt to control same) during a debate with Obama, say.
Of course, a certain segment of the population (I'm not naming names) would find such hair-trigger behavior a sign of battle-readiness, and therefore desirable when the enemy-du-jour threatens to come calling.

the problem is with a hair-trigger temper there is no shortage of enemy du jour. The part people fail to realize, ESPECIALLY the right, is the next President needs to make working with people an art form. THe current disgrace in teh White House should be proof enough of what happens when that fails and the next president will have an awful log of bridges to mend. Notice we haven't heard about the coaliton of the willing for quite a while.

"McCain's volatility is well documented".
Really? Where?
All I hear is vague innuendos like yours with nothing to back them up.
Please prove me wrong and list this documentation.

Alleged assault 12 years ago.
For what reason?
Were there recordings? The witnesses quoted were all proponents of the legislation he was not supporting. There must have been others present. What did neutral witnesses report? What is McCain's version?
And why on earth would John McCain, prisoner of war for five years, be against anything in favor of POW's?
Sorry; this looks like hit-piece stuff. There are plenty of legitimate reasons to reject John McCain; this is distraction.

I believe it's in the record, in the link on Jordan's comment, that he has repeatedly voted against the interests of families of POWs/MIAs. Several veterans organizations have given him ratings in the 20% on his voting record on veterans issues.
As for the assault, all we have is the word of the people involved, the complaint to the senate ethics committee, and a complaint to the capitol police. No investigation was done so nothing else will be available.

I tend to agree about the 'assault' accusation, but it didn't take much investigation at all to realize there is something very wrong. McCain did single handedly stop legislation that would open up files on POW's/MIA's & hold anyone who lied about them criminally responsible. The House had passed the legislation by a 100% vote. Something is not right.

"the word of the people involved, the complaint to the senate ethics committee, and a complaint to the capitol police."
Assuming the complaints were lodged by the people originaly involved, you dont really have 3 source of information you have 1.
And if the article says the capital police decided not to press charges, doesn't that mean they did some form of investigation?
And I repeat: were there neutral witnesses? where is John McCain's version of events?
I don't want to be supporting McCain, who needs to lose for the good of his country. I just don't want to be in one thread shouting 'unfair! slander!' and in another thread agreeing with anything anyone throws.
It's tacky.

I thought it was tacky, too. Then I watched the video, and listened. They seemed so frustrated...not about the supposed 'attack,' but about his suppression of information to families. So I looked, and they're right. I'm glad it was put up, or I'd never have known about this. WHY is John McCain on a mission to suppress information about POW's and MIA's? WHY has the the press suppressed this for years? Something's wrong.

No one is asking you to agree or disagree. The information is out there. Of course it is stated that these charges are alleged, but like what Jordan said, "Why would a former POW be so vehemently against legislation that would seek to help other POW/MIA's get what they considered justice?" I feel this is a legitimate question? On another point, why would a former jailer of a POW endorse McCain and say emphatically that he was never tortured?

"No one is asking you to agree or disagree".
Hmm. Ok.
Then I point out that no one asked you to agree or disagree with me agreeing or disagreeing, and its downhill to hell from there.
I can't imagine either, why the former jailer of a POW would emphaticly deny that there had been any torturing*.
Life is mysterious.

Another interesting tidbit. The wife of John McCain has made many visits to Vietnam. Even as recently as a week ago.
