When I was young, and people called me the various names we all know and I won't repeat, I would get upset and tell my father. He would respond something like this:
"Son, are you those things? If you are, then accept it. If you are not, then the person is ignorant and their words can't hurt you." His point is that sometimes words are just words, and only the ignorant get upset about them.

Reminds me of the controversy back in 1999 when a white aide to the mayor of Washington D.C. used the term "******rdly" and was hounded into resigning when one of his black coworkers, who apparently didn't know the meaning of the word, complained that he made a racial slur. The only reason that they offered the guy his job back was because he was gay and forcing him out put two different p.c. priorities in conflict. It was a ridiculous thing to make a racial argument since the term in question has nothing to do with the racial term which sounds something like it.
Looks like I couldn't even post the term "******rdly" in spite of the fact that it's a legitimate word and not a racial slur. Thanks for proving my point Propeller! The propetuation of ignorance continues.

--Are you black? Do you know any black people you can ask why the offended party in the example you gave might've reacted (or overreacted) to the use of the word? And so what if someone didn't know a word? Big deal. Did you know that "hysterical" is misogynist or have you ever stopped to consider the obvious homophobic origin of a phrase like "you suck"? People aren't perfect and perhaps the person insulted reacted out of ignorance but what is so horrible about thinking twice or taking someone else's feelings into consideration before using a racially or otherwise culturally charged word or phrase?

This guy is a total MORONIC SOB and should be removed from office. We should get rid of all PC (which stands for POLITICAL CRAP).
Why the devil's food cake, is he calling Blacks devils or what? How about Black paint, Black light, my Black car, will I have to paint it a different color. Will we have to eliminate Black crayons?
Does anyone have an email address that we can send a message to this IDIOT and tell him what we think of him?

Why, other than to ridicule black people, did you submit this story? Granted, it's arguably an overly broad interpretation of racism but sometimes it seems those on the right deliberately seek opportunities to deride and antagonize black people. I doubt this notion that things like devil's food cake will soon be forbidden but we've had to adjust to many things as we become a more progressive society.
Beginning in the seventies we learned to call some women "Ms." Can anyone here remember the last time they were on a plane and requested the attention of a "stewardess"? In 2008 we no longer have "bellboys" and fewer women in the film industry are calling themselves "actresses." What is the big freaking deal to oblige yourself to move with the times and be considerate of other people's feelings once in a while (or at least try to understand (rather than immediately put down) someone else's feelings)?

Seems to me that this guy is the one trying to antagonize those of other races.
Personally, I think we have lost a lot of the color and descriptiveness of our language with many of the pc terms that have been foisted upon us in last thirty years.

"It is people like this that slow the progress of race relations in this country."
It's a two-way street. If people are ignorant enough to think he speaks for the entire black population (does George Bush represent the views of all white people?), they are part of the problem. Understanding and tolerance is needed on both sides.

"This is just silly now. If you use the word black in a derogatory manner, you should be slapped down, but black hole? That is just nuts."
--Maybe some of us should stop exaggerating and playing the martyr for five minutes out of the day and consider the possibility that, as crudely stated as we might consider his message, maybe there's something of value to be learned about racism in general.

However, any reference to 'rice' is, of course, anti Asian in nature and cannot be accepted either. The ACLU has been contacted in regard to your blatant use of the 'r' word and we suggest you seek legal council....

This man, and I use the term loosely, is just plain nuts.
Black hole is because of an absence of light.
Devils food cake was originally red and spicy. It was one of many foods that were deviled in the 19th century. The term was presumably adopted because of the connection between the devil and the excessive heat in Hell.
Angel Food cake goes back to the early 19th century. Also called ice cream cake (a Pennsylvania Dutch wedding cake). No shortening or leavening but a lot of egg whites beaten very stiff.
None of it has to do with race. This guy has his head where the sun doesn't shine.

I thought the black hole was Obama's mouth when he opened to speak.
A large dark hole that has nothing meaningful coming out of it.

WHITE sugar...BAD!!! Unfortunately for African Americans, just about everything else that is dark or black is considered scary. Only animals seem to love the dark, except for a dog I knew when it was around African Americans. Oh...my...gosh, that was sooo embarrassing. The dog was trembling, wimpering, and peeing standing up when they showed at the party. And they were a nice, friendly family, also.

I'm an iron worker...I love black iron. I love the look of it, the feel of it in my hands.
Ask any farmer..."black dirt" is good fertile dirt.
Black is the preferred color for most Mercedes and Limousines...it's a symbol of wealth in these instances.
As a soldier, I prefer a black night. In Japan white is the color of death. So, I think white flour is racist...and suggests the flour is dead.
My great grand mother was 'black Russian'...referring to Mongolian heritage...Mongolians have conquered more of the world at one time than any other people on earth. I'm glad to have 'black' Russian in me.

"BLACK Hole" sounds racist? But if you call it an "African American Hole", people will become confused. Of course, I'd rather hear the term "black hole" any day than the word "******rdly". I don't think you can make that word sound better even if you changed it to African Americandly. See that, even Propeller didn't accept it.

What a doofus. Price has made Dallas the laughing stock of the nation, yet he's too proud to back down from an obviously foolish position. He's even compounded the mess by throwing angel/devil food cake into the mix. Price's comical attempt at PC censorship will fail - black hole as a term for an intractable situation or condition is here to stay.
The fact that a clueless clown like Price holds an important government position in Dallas speaks volumes of what is wrong with the political system - and why more and more people are tuning politicians out. When politicians offer malaprops instead of solutions, who can blame them?

Price is a nut. All of us who live here know this.
Black holes are black because the extreme gravity well doesn't let any light escape...lol.
His comment that a scientific fact is racist...is racist. He's one of the biggest racists in our city.

I'm 'black' Irish and damned proud of it. You take away the 'black' from my ethnicity and I'm gonna be dammed p's'd off. He could be just as proud of the work 'black' in his race and ethnicity as I am. Don't you even think of calling me something other than 'black Irish'...I'll clobber you.
Whiner.

OK I can not read any more posts until I tell you a little about John Wiley Price. JWP has been a thorn in everyone's side since he has had a position.
He has been in Dallas politics as long as anyone serving in Congress right now. He has caused more strife with his victimized thoughts. He has claimed more than once the white man was out to get him.
He has been busted for crimes of money laundering. He has been brought up on charges for taken bribes. He has been brought up on charges for sexual misconduct. Now he has been under house arrest. His lawyers whined till the judge gave in.
If JWP was put into jail. He would not be able to survive. JWP won't survive cause he is a wimp. Not only that but JWP makes Jesse Jackson and Sharpton look like civilized responsible people. And we all know they are not.
Feck JWP, and the horse he rode in on. The man has been a scar on this city more than anyone else.
