      Gee Klarris, as a former educator I'd have thought you'd be more broad minded to the idea that what he meant was for Americans to broaden their horizons. We'll be less self centered, if we learn more about other people! But, such is how you right wingers spin your lies and deceptions!

        really, Donald, I am tired of Obama's supporters saying , "What he meant".

        He said what he said.

        One of the things that bothers me about Obama's supporters is that I read a lot of personal interpretation of what he said, giving it a meaning that fits with the supporter's "hope".

        He didn't say anything about adults, he said, "Americans need to make sure your child can speak Spanish", implying that English will not be the language of the land when the children grow up.

                Personally, I think both McCain and Obama are 2 sides to the same coin. Voting for either one will demonstrate how short-sighted most Americans can be. The man who has consistently shown that real change can occur is Ron Paul.

              Frankly, it seems to be in Obama's tendency to mock America at every turn. Whether it is those that "kling to bibles...guns" or if America is "a country we were never truly proud of until..."

              Its more the "DNA" of the leftist and elitists to mock Americana. Academia worships idealistic collectivisms as they are detached from the working America. Hollywood stars decry the base American culture as they jet-set about vacation villas throughout Europe and win affection from the anti-American glitter-otti.

              Obama is just a product of the leftist elitist indoctrination of the Ivy schools and the hardcore anti-American racial politic that dominates to urban grievence culture.

              Obama is working to win the votes of the middle now. The left will tolerate his deceptions because they value power over principle (the ends justify...).If he can avoid the mocking of country and family so common among his crowd, he will succeed.

              Obama is 50% Caucasian from his mother's side and 43.75% Arabic and 6.25% African Negro from his father's side. While Obama's father was from Kenya, his father's family was mainly Arabs. Obama's father was only 12.5% African Negro and 87.5% Arab (his father's birth certificate even states he's Arab, not African Negro)

                Take a look at Obama's father & his live relatives in Kenya.

                They are 100% African Black, there is no Arab blood in that clan. They are Muslims as a segment of Black Africans are but they Obama's Luo Tribe immediate family are black not Arab.

          Its good advice to have your child speak Spanish. I regret not starting my kids on a foreign language at an international school at an early age. Spanish would be a top choice. Americans who are bilingual are getting all the top jobs.

          Donald51's interpretation of what Obama said is just as valid and probably more accurate than yours, because it doesn't come couched in political bias.

          Actually svensun, you are way off base. Talk about LEAPING TO CONCLUSIONS--

          So on the one hand, critics of Obama are saying " This is what he actually said" so you can't argue what he meant. Now svensun comes along and is making an argument about what Obama meant, based on nothing Obama said. It's really pretty funny.

          Obama's statement is the opposite of stifling debate. It is encouraging going the extra mile by learning another language to be inclusive. It is the grass roots pragmatic Obama speaking. Sometimes you need to actually make an effort to get something done. People who don't want to go global will just get left behind.

            Did he NOT say that? Does he believe that it is still appropriate for Americans to INSIST that immigrants LEARN English, that our schools should focus on THAT GOAL?

            I can tell you that in California, the citizens of this state were 'worrying about whether immigrants can learn English' so much that in 1998, 63% voted for Propositon 227, which says, in part:

            "f) Therefore, It is resolved that: all children in California public schools shall be taught English as rapidly and effectively as possible.

            Article 2. English Language Education

            305. Subject to the exceptions provided in Article 3 (commencing with Section 310), all children in California public schools shall be taught English by being taught in English. In particular, this shall require that all children be placed in English language classrooms."

            So what does B. Hussein mean, exactly?

        Well put. The wars are global - the economy is global -

        health crises are global - and shortages of resources

        are global as well. So what could be wrong with encouraging

        our students to be fully able to participate in this

        global society?

        My guess is because he said "Spanish" - Hispanic,Latino or

        Mexican, the very mention of the word is like a flash point

        right now. When's the last time anyone voiced concern about

        the Russian mob? No way - we are too busy demonizing Latin

        Americans. There are school districts that brag about their

        distinction of having a high graduation rate of students

        with Russian and Chinese language skills. They regard this

        as progress - mention Spanish and the reaction is entirely

        different.

        I've had plenty of beefs with Obama lately - but his

        entreaty that we embrace the concept of multi-lingual

        skills is not one of them. He was speaking about LANGUAGE -

        it wasn't an immigration issue.

      My advice would be instead of taking a snippet of his quote that was used in this article/poll solely for the purpose to misled is to instead watch his entire speech that he made from Powder Springs Georgia. It's very clear as to where he was going with this subject. Americans are lacking compared to many other counties in the area of foreign languages. For instance our FBI and military has a severe shortage of people that can speak the languages that can help us in the fight against terror. This really is a no brainer...

          My high school offered foreign languages as electives, but sinse you can't get a good job without speaking English, most of my friends have forgotten the language they spent a couple of years learning.

          Oddly, they do remember what they learned in auto-shop, making me wonder which was more valuable. Hmmmm....

              I wouldn't agree with that. I do all my own work on my cars and you have to know what your doing. Both skills are equally valuable.

              In today's society having a second language is an asset. The business world is definately more global than it was when I was growing up.

            We do, it's still hard for a person who doesn't speak English to move up in this country. Many companies offer services in both English and Spanish to increase their business and bring in more potential customers.

            They can learn English and those who stay do. From a good many of the posts I see here many of you seem to think that they should learn to speak English before they even set foot in this country.

              When traveling it's a good idea to have a little knowledge of the language used in the country visiting/working. I've visited places where the locals are much more helpful if you try asking questions in their native tongue. However, the system in the US is now almost catering to those who speak Spanish. So when many immigrants come here and find out they don't even have to speak a different language to work within the society they don't even try. There are people who have lived here in the US for 10 years and still don't know a single word of English.

                I guess is depends on where you work. When I was working in hotels the Spanish employees where learning English as fast as they could that way they could get moved up. Otherwise they could only work under those who spoke both languages.

  What a bunch of garbage having people speak their native language and it be acceptable to having the government and other businesses forced to talk them. This article is about Spanish but we have groups that speak German, Romanian, French, Chinese, Japanese, etc. If we do this with Spanish all the other language groups will be standing in line for their language to be accounted for. Then everybody should be forced to learn several languages.

    I went to France, so I bought a phrase book ($6) and learned what I needed to in order to get by.

    I didn't have the nerve to assume they should speak English as I have respect for thier culture, customs, and national heritage of which their language is a big part.

    Why Obama has no respect for our national heritage I have no idea, but OUR PRESIDENT SHOULD RESPECT OUR CUSTOMS AND HERITAGE.

        As the great-grandchild of IMMIGRANTS, I can tell you that EVERY ONE OF my great grandparents LEARNED ENGLISH, and half of them were ILLITERATE- they never knew how to read or write, but they LEARNED HOW TO SPEAK ENGLISH!

        I just went to the funeral of a neighbor who immigrated here from Naples in the 1930's with his three brothers, sister, and parents, and EVERY ONE OF THEM LEARNED TO SPEAK ENGLISH! Sure, one of his brothers was in the first grade for six years, but THEY LEARNED ENGLISH.

        As someone who traces his roots to Milwaukee, as German a town as you can find, you better believe people learned to speak English, if they wanted to work.

        Don't give me this malarkey about past waves of immigrants not learning English.

        You have provided ZERO evidence for that.

            Atheism, how many German immigrants to the US came here and set up exclusively German-speaking communities?

            As I've said, my family is from Milwaukee, a German-speaking American city if there ever was one. You can call Milwaukee an bit of anecdotal evidence, but I think the example it provides is FAR MORE ILLUSTRATIVE of the German-American experience than the unnamede community that your girlfriend's ancestors set up.

            Were there German-speaking communities started across America? SURE! We can probably all find one in our part of the country; Anaheim, CA comes to mind, here in Southern California.

            But to claim that such communities make up the rule, rather than the exception, to the German-American experience is not credible.

            To claim that my family's anecdotes don't disprove the anecdote of your girlfriend's family does not make a convincing argument, either. I'd say FOUR anecdotes beats ONE anecdote, hands down!

    When it was French, would you have insisted everyone learn French? Most Americans are either too stupid or too lazy to learn a second language. It's an embarassment in a world where most Europeans speak at least three languages.

      IMO, the second language of the world should be sign language. Then a person could 'talk' with anyone in the world, and bring a segment of the worlds population more into the mainstream (the deaf). Two birds, one stone.

          They can carry signing flash cards on their person and use a pencil in their mouth as a pointer if they are missing both arms. Get serious. It's a very valid concept. But we all kmow it will not happen either.

          You forgot to mention the blind, but those same armless flashcards could have brail on them too. So we're right back where we started from. I'm sure the blind and the amputees would be in the extreme minority, but there would be easier solutions for them than entire languages, like they don't deal with that already.

        Good thought, Jordan11. But, if people are too lazy, stupid, biased or self-centered to learn a second language when they're already able to speak, they will certainly be too lazy, stupid, biased and self-centered to learn to sign!

        You would have the same whiners and complainers that you have right now. It's all about them and their narrow little comfort zone!

          Cushi, I tried learning French & Spanish, & have to say I was a failure at it. In my defense, I was awfully busy with my life, & couldn't give it the time I needed to. But sign is different, & can work to mean the same anywhere. A shoe is a shoe, in any language. I picked it up very quickly. So did my coworkers, and we taught our clients (autistic kids) very quickly. Oh well, it was just a thought. Easier to learn sign, than a hundred different languages.

      I whole-heartedly disagree.

      In Europe, you don't have a cultural melting pot. You have the native language and the languages of commerce.

      The United States is much different. We have 30plus native languages and English is the world's primary language of commerce (even Japanese people largely speak English). Within five years, the largest English speaking country in the world will be China. (shift happens)

      To insult me as an embarassment because I don't speak Spanish (or French or Swahili or Farci)is naive and ridiculous.
