The Federal highway fund is losing money. With people driving less, the tax revenue from gasoline is dropping. So Congress has decided to consider raising (yes, raising) the gas tax, which will drive price up at the pump. They are considering a hike of 10 cents/gallon.

My first reaction was "they can't really be this stupid, can they?" But upon reflection, keeping gas prices high does a lot of good for the Congressional leadership.

It creates pressure to pursue long-term alternatives, even though the technology is decades away from fruition. As long as gas is expensive, other alternatives are comparatively on par.

Of course, this make the American economy less competitive and hurts everybody who buys gas. That's how it works when the government decides what's best for us.

People are driving less because gas prices are too high. So the fed thinks raising the price of gas will help?

Why are you surprised? They have been saying things like this for a while. They talk about new technology but ignore that it has been studied to death by NASA. They were charged into researching this under Carter. It is one of their ongoing efforts.

      Stupid? yes.

Our Democrat Governor here in Colorado is tired of us having (relatively) cheap gas and wants to raise the taxes the oil producers pay in our state. He claims it won't raise prices. Now that is stupid.

This is the same IDIOT that decided to close down our natural gas and oil production for three months out of the year to protect the "endangered" prairie dog.

While gas prices are extraordinarily high Democrats have blocked every effort to increase supplies and any attempt to lower prices. All they have proposed are tax increases (Windfall Profits Tax) on oil companies, suing OPEC (which would cost the taxpayer millions, if not billions), and continually shoot down the gas tax holiday. All of which of course, would be passed along to consumers and drive gas prices even higher.

In other words, the ONLY solution to our dependednce on foreign oil and cheaper gas prices, according to the Democrat Congress, is to raise gas taxes. There is NO alternative. Government MUST have more money and the ONLY way to do that is to raise taxes. Got it?

if you had a monopoly on a commodity that was bringing 3 to 4 times it's actual worth, and you had a source for more of it,would you make it all available knowing you were going to cut the price down by 75%? Or would you sit on the excess, and claim that there was a shortage?

You know what you have to do, you have to replace all those who are standing in the way of Domestic Drilling, all those Democrats whose only answer to our problem is to raise Federal taxes. They think we are stupid, certainly too stupid to figure out who is the problem. We replaced the do nothing Republicans in 06, because Pelosi promised Democrats would do something about high gas prices. they did they doubled them. Now is the time to replace the do nothing Democrats. I guarantee the new Republicans will pay attention, lest they get removed before their retirement kicks in.

The oil companies don't want to produce more oil, if they did, they would open the many quiet wells that are here in the US.

Drilling in ANWAR is strictly a republican smear!

"I guarantee the new Republicans will pay attention, lest they get removed before their retirement kicks in."

Just like they "paid attention" during the first 6 years of this a$$holes administration?

They continue to ask for what they can't have, knowing it will give them an opportunity to point the finger at their opponent! Kinda like ainokly!

At some point we understand that in an ideal world we would all have a Prius, and we would save on gas, but this is not an ideal world, and we cannot afford a Prius, so we need to increase our domestic oil production.

And it's more than that. We don't need the government telling us what's good for us. We don't need even more taxes. Maybe, just maybe, if the price of gas dropped, more people would drive. More tax revenue would be generated. And the highway fund would be solvent.

But this Congress seems to like to avoid the economic realities of the situation, and they seem to really like to add taxation.

Everything the government does is a contradiction - they raise CAFE standards to reduce gas consumption. Did it ever occur to them that it would also decrease the money going into the highway trust fund?

Now that consumers are demanding cars with better gas mileage, the car companies will respond and much quicker than by govt mandate

End result - a further reduction in gas tax revenues

Congress will whine that they need higher gas taxes for roads and bridges

Has it ever occurred to any of them that the entire mechanism for funding roads and bridges needs revamped?

My preference - remove it from the Feds entirely and move it back to the states. Unfortunately most of DC only gives lip service to states rights and Congress would never willingly give up that much control - they would lose too much pork

They should look at taxing vehicles based upon weight and miles driven. Of course then they would have a major uproar when voters realize how much they actually pay in taxes to the Feds

It's easier to hide the taxes paid in the purchase price. It's like employers deducting income tax every pay instead of requiring the average taxpayer to write a check to the Treasury every quarter

                  The Nanny state has spoken.

We need more tax money to put into our pockets so we can take care of you by demanding more taxes.

I'm sure that after wrangling with this idea for a whole two or three hours they will need to adjourn for a week or two because of the mental exhaustion caused by such a mentally demanding task. Then after that, they can give themselves another pay raise for being so hardworking at tending to the needs of 'we the people'.

                          As I noted above:

My preference - remove it from the Feds entirely and move it back to the states. States know better what they need instead of someone in Congress deciding. Unfortunately most of DC only gives lip service to states rights and Congress would never willingly give up that much control - they would lose too much pork

Since that will never happen they should look at taxing vehicles based upon weight and miles driven.

This is inevitable. Also, if electric cars become a higher percentage of vehicles on the road, those driving gas powered will have to pay even more.

Raising taxes seems to be Congress' knee jerk reaction to everything.

Here we have the cost of fuel about doubling in a year, whipping up inflation (because EVERYTHING has to be transported by truck at least part of the way), so one of their big ideas is to use ethanol --- made from corn. Okay, no problem that ethanol doesn't have the energy of gasoline so that mileage goes down, it is more expensive than gasoline, so gas prices rise further and fields and corn that could be used to produce food for people and livestock are now growing fuel, so food prices rise even further.

Solution??? Raise the taxes so fuel (and everything else) costs even more! Brilliant strategy. Wish I had thought of that! (sarcasm).

and, btw.. wtf is with propeller??? This is not that easy to navigate, it ditched my avatar and wouldn't let me upload another and what do those 10.0's mean?

Approval rating last week 9, this week -0. Idiots! If higher taxes would fix things we'd be trouble free, we are taxed enough! In the 70's gas lines a light bulb moment should have happened to the President, Senate and House in that we might be in deep manure over gas in the future?????????????????

Liberal democrats don't really believe that they can make things better by raising taxes. That it doesn't work and never has means nothing to them they just want your money. Because they want any small amount of power you might have and taking your money is the most efficient way to relieve you of that power. Making people poor is what they are all about because when you're poor they think you will become their victim and eventually their slave.

The whole tar and feather, dog and pony show with oil CEO's was a joke. As oil companies earned additional margin for each dollar of cost, so has the federal government earned its additional share of taxes per increased dollar of cost. This tax hike is no surprise to me. Those gold diggers on Capital Hill know a good thing when they see it.

Bring back the cry for term limits!!!
